I am actually going through this right now with my next prospective employer… I turned down another consultancy before I came to EY and I explained to them why I turned them down. It wasn’t personal, EY just seemed like a better fit at the time… As part of the interview process this time around, I have explained a little bit as to why I think they are a better fit for me right now. You can always use your personal experiences and where you are in your career to tell that story that “it wasn’t the right fit five years ago, but I’m in a different place right now and I think it is a better fit for me at this point in my career. “
Good luck !
Withdrawing after you accepted an offer or just turning down an offer
If you rescinded the offer after accepting, then that most likely is a bad look. If not, you’ll probably be fine
Just turning down the offer without accepting
It would depend on whether or not it's the same hiring manager and their pettiness, but really if it were an issue then it's confirmation you made the correct choice originally. Ideally by the time things come to offer stages you and the candidate are aligned, but it's never a guarantee. People are negotiating multiple opportunities and someone you want to wok for will recognize that for what it is.
I can’t imagine several years later that any of the people are still there or remember all those details. As long as you didn’t rescind and simply turned it down it’s very normaI for great candidates to get more than one offer and choose the one the best suits them. I wouldn’t think twice about it. You were the one that got away.
