Has anyone heard of a first-year associate getting fired for low hours?

I’m sure people have, but I feel like it’s the wrong thing to dwell on. Maybe ask for more work or ask for a meeting with a partner to talk about your concerns and how you want to be contributing more. If you’re super burned out, you might want to consider switching jobs. Easier said than done I know, but at least then you won’t feel like you’re just waiting for the axe to drop.

Of course! And FWIW, I’m a 3rd year and my hours are not where they were last year. It’s a hard year for most people, especially if you are just starting out! Try to be kind to yourself.

This basically happened to me, but the office of the firm I was at was a toxic sinking ship at that point (at least a third of the associates had left in the previous few months). Looking back, I think they were not doing well financially.

At the time I felt humiliated, but the senior associate/partner I had done most of my work for (who both bailed shortly before this) assured me that when first years get let go for “low hours” or “not a good fit” or anything that isn’t truly a massive dealbreaker, it usually has more to do with the firm or office than the associate.

Anyway, I landed on my feet and am fine. My sense is that this doesn’t happen very often, so I wouldn’t worry too much.

Solid tips or strategies on cutting back on alcohol? My bf & I were moderate drinkers before the pandemic, but over the year I’m fairly confident we’ve become heavy drinkers (6-7days/wk). I’m stressed about it and have mentioned cutting back for a while, but he insists we’re fine. I find it rly difficult to go cold turkey or cut by myself when he’s still drinking as “normal” and we share our living space. We’re aware of all the health risks, but that alone hasn’t changed us. All advice welcome!

I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

I find myself questioning basic politeness I’ve learned since a child. Wondering what everyone else thinks. I work with an associate. She’s great. When she does good work or something I’ve asked her to do, I, of course, say “thank you!” I don’t really expect a response. She always replies “you’re welcome!” Or some variation. And for some reason, that’s awkward. Is it just me? I know in normal manners, that is the right response. Why does it sit funny?
