Has anyone heard of any weekend Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs in the US? Wondering how others with fairly busy weekdays have balanced continuing care with their schedules as my current program hasn’t been able to offer realistic solutions

I can give some insight into my experience! I went through Recovery Centers of America (I hope there’s one near you, it was a phenomenal experience). I just called them directly to plan things since they accepted my insurance. I did 7 days in patient for “detox”, but had the opportunity to take classes and go to a nightly AA meeting on campus. Work was SO supportive. I told them I needed medical leave and they approved, no questions asked. I am really close with my direct manager so he knew the real reason.

After that, I enrolled in virtual iop, 3 nights a week for 3.5 hours each on Zoom. You can enroll in this even if you’ve never done inpatient. Also fantastic experience and convenient with my work schedule. It was jarring to leave the rehab “safe space” so it was nice to have nightly sessions with folks I could relate to in terms of alcoholism.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to talk things through! Any steps towards sobriety can be terrifying, but you’re not alone and you’ll learn to navigate.

Name of the virtual iop program?

Hi,
I would reach out to your EAP and see what they say. I had to take a three month leave of absence from Kearney to focus on recovery and therapy. Best thing I ever did.

I just completed a 10 week IOP. It was 3 hours of group therapy 3x a week. It did not offer a weekend program. I’d recommend googling and seeing if you can find one in your area. But be prepared IOP is called “intensive” for a reason. It may be in your best interest to take a short term medical leave to focus on it. I’m sure McKinsey has a good medical leave program.

To get started to go your dr and get a referral to a psychiatrist. Tell the shrink what is going on and that you want an IOP and need a leave of absence to really focus on it. The shrink will handle all the paperwork.

For me the IOP was just what I needed to get my life and health back on track. The therapy stirred up a lot of stuff for me that k had to think through and process. I wouldn’t have been able to really heal had I been working while doing the program.

I wonder if you are seeking weekend IOP because you are maybe still in partial denial about the seriousness of your situation or there is some guilt or fear of “being found out.”

Don’t be. Going on leave is completely private. Your boss/team won’t know if it’s to take care of grandma, cancer, or addiction

That said — caution that having alcoholic label in your medical record can have long lasting impact for jobs or insurance that require medical clearance. You may need to soften your issues to work stress not alcoholic. Others here can advise.

Anyone else ever told that you go “too above and beyond” for your customers? For example, I deal with a lot of returns and repairs and sometimes customers don’t have their order information. I offer to help them find it with just some supplemental info. Could take anywhere from an extra 5 to 25 min of digging, depending on what info they can provide. Direct manager? Doesn’t care. Her boss however, made that comment this morning when asked about my daily productivity.

My boyfriend of a year got a DUI this weekend and has had drinking problems in the past. He fully admits he is an alcoholic, and will do therapy/go to AA moving forward. My therapist suggested I be a “computer program running in the background” and essentially leave him to allow him to work on himself. This is obviously a really hard decision, and I feel like I should listen to my therapist, but my heart is pulling me the other way. Anyone else been through something similar or have advice?

My husband is an alcoholic and it’s getting worse with the holidays. He’s started every day drinking high alcohol-content IPAs as early as 8am. And he drinks them all day and all night like soda. He did AA when he was younger but is now vehemently against it. He is high-functioning. Has a PhD from MIT and works for a venture capitalist firm. I wondered how he gets through the day, but he started to come home early (mid-afternoon) and immediately open a beer while working. What should I do?

I struggled with binge drinking for many years after my mom passed away. I have been sober for the past 12 months. My husband has struggled with drinking for a long time as well, and just got done serving a 6 month sentence for his second DUI (on ankle bracelet at home for 4 months of the sentence). He got out of jail this week, and he has drank almost everyday since. He says he is different now, and can control himself (i.e, he won't be abusive or drive). Continued in comments..

It’s been 6 months since I’ve last had a cigarette. The process was pretty seem-less, with no cravings. However, this past has been especially difficult. My sister came to visit and she’s a smoker, she really needed a cigarette while driving, now since I caught whiff of the smoke, this past week has been my worst with cravings. Tips to cope, so far— I chew gum to help.

My first holiday season sober. This is really hard. Don't like having to turn down invites to events I know I would be tempted to have a drink at. Having to tell people not to gift me nice bottles (something I loved for years) because I'm sober, the whole thing honestly just makes me feel lonely and frustrated. Don't relish having to explain it to family at Christmas either. This sucks!

My son is about to go to college. His dad passed away when he was 8 and had an addiction to alcohol. I am so scared he is going to enter college life and become addicted to things after being curious. We have talked about it many times, but teenagers think they know everything and are invincible. I have told him there is a 50% chance he got the addiction gene and he needs to be careful. When I went to college I partied and tried it all, but I got lucky not getting addicted. Any advice?

Reached 6 months yesterday after finally realizing that if I allowed it to, alcohol could and would destroy my life and take away everything that I love. I was so afraid that I wouldn’t be able to have peace and comfort without it (insanity, right?). The past 6 months have been the happiest I have ever experienced. My everyday moments with my children are more meaningful, I lay next to my wife knowing she is proud of me and I wake up the next morning without shame. Gratitude!

All addictions are welcome. Sobriety, just like everything else in life, happens one day at a time. Remember, “Nothing changes if nothing changes."
