I am pregnant and I still take it, although a much lower dose, just to stay functioning. It’s all about weighing health of the mother v. risk to fetus

I’m pregnant and stopped taking my meds. It’s been really hard. I feel like I’m only productive 30-40% of my day. So far not fired yet, but I know I can’t keep this up. It’s been a long and hard journey of acceptance but my husband and I decided that if I can’t keep up with my job and still take meds, maybe it’s time for another job/career. I think lots of people with ADHD have successful careers that work well with the strengths we have relative to neurotypical people. I’m really going to try to do that. If that fails I suppose I could get on meds again after the baby is born. Also, I’m thinking of a starting a support group for women in this position bc I’m seeing it’s more common than I thought (I thought i was alone in then struggle!) Would you want to be a part of it?

Don’t have any personal experience but this is something that plays on my mind as I hope to get pregnant in the next few years. More data has come out recently that suggests that adhd medicines may not be as detrimental as previously assumed - however there is still a lot researchers don’t know. I think I may try and stay on a lower dose as I cannot function in a professional environment without my medicine. My plan is to both talk to my doctor (who in the past has told me the mother’s mental health is just as important, and that we would work out a plan), as well as try and consult with a reproductive psychiatrist. Hang in there - I know it is a tough decision and I empathize!

There are docs on podcasts and YouTube who talk about this and mainly feel the benefits to meds outweigh the minor risks, but of course it is a personal decision. But I would hope your doctor is open to letting you make that decision. Try not to let societal expectations or doctor’s misconceptions sway you too much.

I was also very worried about getting off my meds when I found out I was pregnant, but didn't end up having to. I was on 40 mg of Vyvanse daily and 15 mg Adderall as needed when I found out I was pregnant. I was up for partner, working a ton, and need my meds to function. My ObGyn advised I stop taking the Adderall completely, which I did. Under my Dr.'s directions, I stayed on 40 mg of Vyvanse until around 20 weeks when I went down to 30 mg Vyvanse. My Dr. explained that Vyvanse is safer than Adderall and said the biggest risk is low birth weight. Now 27 weeks and everything is tracking normal, including uterus size, estimated baby size, and my weight gain. I've still been able to bill 200 hours a couple of months and 120-140 the others. I was voted partner 6 weeks after telling them I was pregnant. For me, this decision, and all of the others I have made during pregnancy, were made based on a spectrum of risk and weighing short and long term risk and benefit. It's what was best for me and my family right now. Good luck!

I wonder if I could switch to vyvanse instead of my 60 mg of Adderall… I just can’t see myself functioning at work without taking something.

Echoing previous posters who have already mentioned that recent research has suggested the meds may not be as harmful to the fetus as originally thought. The research isn’t conclusive yet, so consult with your doctor. Pregnancy is not a situation where you need to be a martyr for baby though. It is a conversation about weighing your health with the health of the fetus. If something that might be ideal for the fetus in a perfect world is going to destroy your life, it’s not right for you and your pregnancy.

I had several conversations with both my OBGYN and primary care physician. I told them I felt there would be more stress on the baby if I was failing at my job and/or was fired than the side effects that may come from taking the medication. They completely understood that. I switched to an older version that had been out for many, many years because they said if there were very serious noted complications then those would hopefully already be known. I also lowered the dose slightly. Unfortunately, they can’t ethically do studies of the impact of any medication on unborn babies - which I don’t fully understand since there are clearly women who are already taking the medications that they could use as the study group. It may be difficult to do a blind study, but they could at least have a control group even if they know they are a control. So, it’s always a toss up on the benefits and risks. Full disclosure: my son has ADHD and is on the autism spectrum. But, my husband and I both have ADHD. So, I think he would have had that regardless. My husband and I both have some autism characteristics, too. I also went into pre-term labor (which they were able to stop), but that was because I had placenta previa. I don’t think it had anything to do with the medication.

Want to point out that while I’m totally and completely supportive of those who continue to take their meds after speaking with there their doctor, the most recent studies show that taking Ritalin while pregnant does have statistical correlation of heart defects in the baby. I went down a research rabbit hole and found the medical journal that published this. It is a reputable one that looked at lot of data over many years. It was still a very small percentage of babies however, so I think the issue is not totally conclusive/not a total deterrent. But I just wanted to put that here so you have the info. I’d just talk to your providers. Both my PCP and my psychiatrist knew of this study and advised against me taking Ritalin because of it. (Aderall has a poorer track record than Ritalin, unfortunately).

Yes went through this and dropped meds for pregnancy/nursing and started back up after weaning (x2)

I dropped my meds when I was pregnant. More because my RE was quirky and super restrictive than anything. The conversations I had with my psychiatrist were about Ritalin and the limited data but I recall that she was comfortable with prescribing that particular medication in a lower dose. I had a job at the time that had a lot of structure built in and I didn’t have to deal with a the struggle of making myself start my day so being off meds wasn’t as big a deal. However if I had to go through being pregnant again in my current job, I would 100% be taking something.

like

It’s so hard, especially with the added fatigue of pregnancy. I do agree that weaning down as much as you can while trying to conceive is the right move. I felt so sick early on I don’t think I could’ve taken the meds to be honest. I’ve actually surprised myself in being able to be somewhat productive after going cold turkey. If I had a doctor that was cool with it, that would be great, but until I’m completely unproductive I’m okay being off of them. I’m also convinced I may be able to get by with a lower dosage not pregnant

With social security potentially running out, why couldn’t it be an option for the govt to put $5k for every baby that is born in a year into an account Invested in a govt share class S&P 500 fund. Historical average is 10%+, which would provide roughly $2.7 million for a baby born today. Eventually, this would eliminate the need for soc sec tax, and would only cost $18 Billion a year instead of several trillion a year being deposited into the trust.
