The work is easy, the pay is ok to poor, the pension has an absurdly high actuarial value that far eclipses our advantage in yearly pay, but there is exceedingly limited upward mobility and you'll have to be ok with doing essentially the same thing for the rest of your life.
FWIW PwC1, all feds have gotten back pay during shutdowns so unless you are living paycheck to paycheck, it’s not as big of a deal as you are making it seem.
I’m ok with that
That’s the whole reason I got into PA...FBI likes to hire CPAs. If you become a special agent you will take a pay cut, but there is upward mobility and you can do well for yourself down the road. But you won’t be rich. But money isn’t everything. My dad worked a similar job, he was a special agent for Homeland security and when he retired he was pulling in 150k...plus the benefits are really good. But now that I’ve seen the opportunities out there idk if I want to go government and just be comfortable or stay in PA or industry and be well off. Ohh and FBI and Homeland are deemed essential so you don’t have to worry about government shutdowns
Also if you go the FBI or homeland route you can, have excellent opportunities in the private sector afterwards. In 1990 when I graduated I went through most of the fbi recruitment process but decided near the end that I did not want to relocate from NYC to a small to midsize office which was the policy back then. It's also a challenging job from a family perspective but accounting is not 9 tob5 either. You do get to train at Quantico and carry a 10millimeter. I Always wonder where I would be now if I took that path
I've heard the caliber of government people is the lowest rated people in your office. No thanks if that's true.
I didn't read all the comments. Only people who have actually been in gov't should answer. Totally depends on agency. SEC is better than IRS. Treasury is pretty sweet. I was IRS chief counsel. Caliber of the people is amazing. Resources are poor. Admin support is the worst. Benefits are terrible! Health plans are expensive and pay less. The 401k options are very limited. Small match. Small pension. Anyone who thinks the benefits are great must have vested in mid 90's or before. Most recent system sucks. The work and opportunities are amazing.
Applied to the FBI and undergoing the final step in the process. Really looking forward to It! Also, you may think that you can't negotiate with the FBI, but anything is negotiable per my experience.
@Deloitte 1 what things are you negotiating over?
Every time the government has a shutdown if your job is non-essential (includes agency executives) about 80% or so of people idk - are sent home effectively laid off without a pay indefinitely. Every 6 months or so people watch the news and see what’s going to happen to them. Then look up the governments off balance sheet debt (not the quoted number TV mentions - but the $100T if you include social programs). I wouldn’t want a company like that responsible for paying me so I can pay my mortgage. As someone with fed parents - one had to take an employee to court just to get him fired. He molested his niece. That’s how hard it is to remove bad people. So be ready to deal with bottom barrel performers.
Small match? TSP match is 5% dollar for dollar whereas EYs is 50% up to 6%. My TSP is crushing now as well so I don’t see any reason to be concerned about the “limited” options.
I worked in government for 13 years. Government accounting for municipal. I'm not lazy, the work was not all easy, and it was actually fulfilling to me. Better medical than what I currently have.
I've considered it and interviewed for a job. The interviewer told me he will recommend me for the position, but to expect the hiring process to take 6-8 months. So it's not much use if you are in an emergency to get a new job, but I'm fine waiting until summer.
A lot of bureaucracy in govt so I definitely agree that it takes forever to hire
