I toggle on and off the open to recruiters option periodically, I don’t use the public setting that shows in your profile photo.
Echoing the other comments that you shouldn’t turn on the “open to work” badge unless you want to be looking for work. This is like activating your Tinder profile while in a relationship and assuming you won’t get caught because your SO doesn’t have it on their phone.
It’s not a question of owing anything, it’s about getting caught and fired. I can think of several occasions off the top of my head where associates were fired when the partner found out they were looking for a new job.
