Freelance Motion Designer here with 10+ years of experience. Explainer videos are my specialty, but I also do digital marketing content like social ads, animated logos, etc. I want to take my freelance work to a full-time motion designer position.

Any other motion designers out there that have had success taking their career to the next level? What did it take? Should I learn more skills? Perhaps market myself more?
Its not hard actually. It just has to be what you want and understand what the AD role entails. Understand that AD is a bigger picture and idealization role. rather than an execution role
I just officially made the jump a few months ago. My title on here isn’t updated yet. It took a long time of doing a “hybrid” role at whatever agency I was at at the time, then another because I got laid off from the first one during covid, then finally started at a new agency at the AD title. I was told for a long time that my book comes off as that of a designer and wasn’t conceptual enough. I also didn’t have enough produced work or TV spots. So I would say focus on getting conceptual, produced work in your book. If the agency you’re at will let you go on production, even better. I’ve also been getting contacted for jobs recently where they are looking for an AD with a design background, so it seems like people are viewing it as more of an asset than they used to.
I’ve done it and know a few friends who have, but it almost always takes jumping to a new place where you can reset. Then you can choose the role you want to present as and position yourself for. I can’t think of as many people successfully having done it without leaving, but I’m sure it happens if you have managers who believe in you and are willing to help.
In the process myself, its odd being hybrid this is where in house is a strength of being versatile.
I've done it! If you have conceptual chops you can make that jump easily
What is target like? Would love to chat if possible.
