Standing up to bullies is always worth it, and if it gets you fired then you don’t want to work there anyway.

Gently ask if internal calls could be recorded going forward for folks’ future reference.
It is not worth it. Plan your exit from the project. He was this way his entire career and still moved up the change. Please keep that in mind
I think it is totally worth it but be prepared to leave and you may want to after it anyway. But you may be that one shot that destabilizes that guy’s reign.

how is standing up for what is right breaking a professional boundary in your org?

I think the way I’d stand up and the words Id probably use may not be the most professional 😂

Back in the day when I was a young consultant, I reported a manager who was bullying a few people on the team when I had solid evidence on her. No one else came forward to support me but at least I never had to work under her again so it worked out for me. The SM also acknowledged that not everyone is cut out to be a people manager. Always be brave and standup for what you believe in, even if the consequences intimidate you. That’s what we teach children right? Don’t be a coward.
If you choose to speak up, your voice will be stronger as a chorus. Speak to your colleagues and consider coordinating a unified response.
In my experience, people like that will treat you the way you let them treat you. I've fired shots across the bow occasionally as an underling and still do up the chain if the manner of delivery is inappropriate for the audience. I will say intraorg is the hardest to navigate. You always want to be able to try and self-solve first. Fire back "let's keep it professional" when you're in the group and see what happens. When I get escalations like this my first question is always "what have you tried?" After you've tried something and it didn't get results just go above this person and voice your concerns. Don't ever feel like someone's rank entitles them to not treat people with respect.
It's always easiest to do nothing - but then nothing changes.

What was this director saying?
Either way, you should stand up for yourself. But also start applying to other jobs, as this sounds like a toxic culture.

The irony: I just started a few months ago! The director just bullies the team for no reason because they have insanely unreasonable deadlines. Everyone is leaving the team already
I got long hair, a pocket full of stones
The first (& last) time I documented and reported bullying in consulting, I was profusely thanked by my team and the guy I stood up for. Even ran into a team mate months later at DU and she was so glad to meet me and thanked me then too. But no one came forward publicly to support my claim at the time, even the victim. The senior manager chalked it up to me being the difficult one. I got rolled off and a bad rating. The bully got promoted.
This person has clearly made it to PPMD level, but people don't change so clearly the organization is encouraging (at least not discouraging) that behavior through their company culture. Walk away OP. You can always tell what a culture prizes by looking at the behavior of their elite. People finally promote, praise and reward the behavior they agree with, even if they don't do own up to that publicly.
I was being bullied by a Senior Partner and stood up for myself a while back. I am a Partner btw, this bulls*** doesn’t disappear at our level unfortunately. Frankly what are they gonna do to me? Fire me? I’m employable elsewhere (changing jobs soon as proof) as is anyone in this economy really. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what’s right. Everyone has the right to human dignity.
Yeah I have. Had a director who bullied the team, made fun of peoples apparances on camera, and was just an outright ass. Reported him to the partner and requested a roll off for both myself and him (half the team was his lackies, other half was bullied). He wasn’t bullying me but I couldn’t stand watching that crap. Partner rolled him off and let me go to another project

Do not do this in a meeting. If it’s a problem, keep a record and report it. I have never seen it end well otherwise.
Yes make sure you stand up for yourself but don’t take on other people’s battles if they don’t speak up for themselves. For example if they come at you a certain don’t pull a “you might treat everyone else thus way but it won’t fly with me.” Address your particular issue or gripe, it’ll be much more effective.
Disagree with you. You have the responsibility as an employee and as a human being to speak up if bullying is occurring. Perhaps your colleague being bullied has something going on that prevents them from speaking up

All the time. Myself and for others.
I have been bullied a few times in my career. Every time I have stood up for myself, I become the problem. I am a minority female BTW.
I love the comments here. I hope you have different results

Upon reading this thread, two simple principles of good humanity ring true:
- Folks want to feel valued (ostracizing others does the opposite for obvious reasons)
- Folks want to be taken seriously (immediately invalidating others’ perspectives does the opposite, again)
In my opinion, if either of these conditions are unacceptable, some leadership members aren’t ready to be in their respective positions.
But hey, what do you think?
