Has anyone here gotten diagnosed and treated for ADD as an adult? Did you go to your primary healthcare provider first or specialist? My house mate is encouraging me to get tested after being around me more in quarantine. I'm afraid a doctor will think I'm drug-seeking.

I thought I had ADHD but then went to get the test done through a psychiatrist two separate times and both times negative.

I may go for a third.

Me. I went to my PCP first, then went to a specialist. I wouldn't feel intimidated by talking to specialists about this topic. You just need to be honest about what you're feeling and how you think you have ADHD.

It was pretty clear to me that I started to struggle in retaining information. I used to love reading my kindle, but recently I couldn't go about reading one page before my thoughts were drifting elsewhere and not being able to remember what was reading in the last paragraph. Staying organized was never a problem with me, it was my focus that began to wear thin over the years.

Yes. I got prescribed right after i graduated from college. I made an appointment directly with a psychiatrist. He asked me some general questions and prescribed me adderall. It was extremely straight forward.

like

Man, it’s really that easy for all of y’all? My psychiatrist has been making me try an antidepressant first before they’ll do anything for ADD :/

like

You can go to your PCP. I get my prescription directly from them

I went to a forensic psychologist for a battery of tests including ADD. Took that to a psychiatrist who gave me lots of good medicine.

In college I went to my primary provider and they referred to a counselor or psychiatrist(?) I don’t really remember. After a couple of sessions they said I displayed mild ADHD symptoms but they didn’t recommend medication. Instead, they prescribed me pills for anxiety and a sort of counseling treatment plan where they coached me on mindfulness lol. I stopped going after 4 sessions bc i found it kinda useless and I didn’t want to pay the copay.

Yes! I didn’t get diagnosed until I started college. My girlfriend at the time was the one who actually made me go get tested because she was tired of me interrupting her. I did a computer test and talked to a counselor. From there I went to my PCP and showed her the results and she prescribed me. If you have a good relationship with your PCP, I wouldn’t worry about seeming like a drug-seeker. Just be honest and tell them what you’re house mate has said. They may be able to just prescribe you or direct you to a psychiatrist or someone similar. They’ll probably want to talk to you and confirm your diagnosis before prescribing you anything.

I appreciate hearing all of your stories. It definitely makes me feel better about looking into this. My ability to focus is definitely going downhill, I get started on a task and then 15 minutes later find myself totally distracted with something else. I'm starting projects before I finish them, and even when I block out time and say okay I'm going to get "project x" done, I find myself working on "project y", and I'm not even sure how that happened... I'm losing stamina to get things done.

I'm also finding it really hard to stay focused on calls for a full 60 minutes without my mind wandering to other topics... And interrupting is definitely a problem... My housemate suggested looking into this after we've been having conversations, and I apparently switch topics out of left field.

Pre-covid, I think I was able to mask a lot of this in a dynamic office environment where we are hopping from conversation to conversation and task to task... But I think this new virtual working environment is exposing these underlying issues.

Depends on who you see for it. I had to take a computerized test that measured accuracy, movement, and impulse (how quick my responses were). They diagnosed me based on those results and the fact that I had brought up my inability to focus over a couple of years prior. Then they had me try a few different medications including Wellbutrin and Ritalin before I was prescribed Adderall.

Got diagnosed last week and started Adderall on Monday. I went directly to a specialist. They started me on antidepressants after a 30 min convo (tried them and hated them), but had to do more extensive cognitive testing for ADHD over the course of several sessions. Adderall is a lifesaver

How much do you save?
First year. Other than maxing out my 401K, I haven’t been saving up much but rather have been spending money splurging, eating out and rent. So basically, my take home salary has all been used paying out credit card balance. I want to get out of this cycle and start saving up (obviously stopping wasting money on stupid shit). My rent is around 5000/month, and I plan on moving out after two years so I don’t have much room. How much should we be ideally saving every month?

I’m very frustrated because I’ve been interviewing with companies for 6-8 months to only be rejected at the final round consistently.

I have lots of relevant experience and I articulate it well but they don’t think it’s a “fit” for them. Finance firms are the only ones that interview me, can’t break into other industries. I feel trapped in my current role and everything is taking a huge toll on my mental health.

Does anyone have tips on how to manage this?
