Has anyone here left their job over return-to-work/WFH policies? Anyone thinking about doing it?

I have a number of friends who are actively on the hunt and taking interviews. I’m still waiting to hear about the new policy though. If I have to go into an office more than twice a week I’ll be joining them. If agencies won’t give raises to account for years of inflation than I’m sure as hell taking back my commuting time and cutting my commuting costs. Especially since I’m waaay more productive at home.

Been thinking about this like crazy. Wrestling with justifying it to myself

I saw the writing on the wall and left a couple months ago before it was announced officially. I’ve never made a better choice. Have since heard they have announced they will mandate 2-3 days in-office. The problem with that is my previous agency’s culture will vilify anyone who’s not there 5 days a week. The leadership will too. Full stop. Part time WFH (I imagine in most cases) is no different than the fairy tale of unlimited vacation. Push back. Walk away if you have to. There are lots of opportunities out there. We actually have some power right now and aren’t likely to get another chance to improve agency working conditions again.

like

Oh right. Suppose I should have mentioned I went freelance. Not for the faint of heart, but if you have a decent network, a good book and some money saved up, it’s totally worth diving into.

I have a few friends who are leaving based on the return to office plans in September. I’m leaving my agency for other reasons, but I’m not even considering non-WFH options. It’s the first thing I discuss before even getting on a call.

like

i'm freelance and get approached with full-time jobs all the time. even more often as of recently. the first question i always ask is about remote. and if they want me in the office i always pass. i imagine this is happening a lot to recruiters right now and i think if we don't cave, they eventually will. and if not, they'll probably die.

like

Didn't leave because of it, but have turned down new opportunities because they wanted full time in office.

like

Yeah I’ve been interviewing because I work at an old school agency and I KNOW the boomers at the top will want us back in the office as much as possible. I won’t quit yet (I gotta condo to pay for!) but also I won’t go back 5 days a week.

like

I’m currently debating quitting because I don’t want to live in the city my agency is based in, although the work itself satisfies me. It’s a really tough decision.

like

I freelance. Any client that wants me in their office, is a big red flag (old way of doing work). Right now is a great time to leave your work. There’s so much movement going on.. I get an offer almost everyday. Talent is in high demand right now.

like

I don’t plan on going back to an office.

The Delta Variant has everything shifting again. Our plans to head back Septemberish are looking dicey at best. Lots of new hires, all remotely, and people are moving across North America but still reporting to their original studios. So the more this “new normal” becomes simply normal, the more interesting and viable the WFH option is likely going to appeal to Big Agencies.

Anyone just getting tired of their partner on a whole new level with WFH? I feel like we are getting into spats more, I'm getting more resentful of the lack of even workloads/effort, and to top it all off these tensions are literally invading my personal space! Not looking for advice really. Just wondering if anyone else is feeling partner fatigue more now than the Before Times.

Need to move to the burbs w/fiancee, but where? Staying in BK is not an option, though we will eventually work in the city 1-2 days/week (someday?). Won't do long island, need a 2 car garage w/space to work on cars and also space for a woodshop whether it's in basement or elsewhere. Planning on having kids and because we'll work from home a lot still need office space. I grew up in burbs and it wasn't so bad because I lived walking distance to train station into the city & nice downtown. 800k!

Does anyone else feel like WFH has made higher ups notice you more? I feel like when we were in the office I was always judged by my looks, how young I was, my ability to make small talk, etc., but not the content or quality of my work. Now that the only thing they have to judge me on is my work, it seems like everyone wants to work for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful but also TERRIFIED to go back in the office and watch all that momentum go down the drain.
