A lot of big brands are now establishing their own in-house agencies. Might want to consider something like that to get your foot in the door. Brands like Verizon in-house agency look for folks with agency account management experience.
I did a couple years ago to a large company. Actually started out my career client side (at small companies) and after 5 years at agencies really wanted to go back.
At my company, product marketers are all MBAs with biz backgrounds, though some have an engineering background also. The translatable role for me was in marcomm where I manage the agencies and work with the marketers on marcomm strategy, though some companies are doing full on in house agencies with equivalent titles.
It seems to help if others there were also recently agency side and value that perspective, and if you can frame it as bringing in a different creative point of view and why that's relevant to them.
Thank you! That’s helpful perspective. There are a ton of open product marketing roles in my area, and I’d love to make that shift, but it’s definitely competitive (especially trying to get in from agency side). I’m also very open to marcomm opportunities, just seem to be far fewer.
Agency life has a shelf life. Going client-side or elsewhere has huge growth potential and massive quality of life improvements. It’s never too late. Your smarts will be valuable and appreciated.
Care to elaborate on massive QOL improvements?
I’m having the same thoughts and wondering if I missed the boat.
My client did it successfully after 7 years at a major network agency. It’s a big shift but can definitely be done.
hey hi hello - I spent 8 years in the indie agency game as an account person before making the switch to an in-house global account lead. Although I elected to change my career path to production for the same brand, working in-house afforded me many opportunities to network within and gain a wealth of social capital.
Highly recommend the move, particularly if you’re looking to explore other roles that leverage your account skills.
I’ve done so much different work in agency life (brand, product, campaign, etc) I’m not sure where to go client side. Are client side opps looking for jack of all trades roles?
If anyone has any suggestions outside of general marcom let me know.
And I thought I was in the corporate world now. Gulp
