I did. It took me about 8 months to start to get into the groove. It’s a different motion but I really enjoyed being able to sell a value based solution - also, my “product” wasn’t a moving target…I was an agency recruiter (commission driven as well) and I hated how candidates could get cold feet at the last minute and start your sales process back from scratch. I was also junior at the time, but saas selling provided much more structure to the selling motion for me to learn the profession.
Depends on how successful you are in each. I was able to accelerate my earnings much more quickly in saas compared to what I think would have been in recruiting.
There is more structure and promotion levels built out in the saas industry versus agency recruiting. Most “partners” in the recruitment firm I worked for probably made between 300-400k with profit sharing. As an AE, I was able to reach that level in about 4 to 5 years Direct selling (as an AE, I didn’t do SDR BDR). Without being said, the biggest biller in recruiting that I knew probably made 1 million in his biggest year.
In my opinion, it’s kind of a crapshoot to pick based off of what you can expect to earn in given year with variable pay. Too many uncontrollables. Pick based on where you want it to take you and how you want to spend your days. There is a grind in both roles, but IMO better money and career outcomes in SaaS. I enjoy value-based selling over the recruitment motion. It’s clearer to me how to differentiate vs your competitors.
