Has anyone here transitioned into teaching from another profession through alternative certification? Did you feel like you were prepared for the classroom by the end?

I did about 4 years ago - it was a residency program. I had a mentor teacher for a year and we did a gradual release model as I slowly took over classroom components while attending classes in the evenings. I felt well prepared by the next year to fly solo. At my current school we have a similar model and most of the teachers we hire from that program are fairly prepared as well (they have first year struggles, but nothing we didn’t all experience)

My background is in graphic design and I joined Teach for America, which was my pathway into teaching. Prior to that I subbed and mentored.

The only people I've know have done the traditional route.

I did alternative certification about 5 years ago. It may just be my area, but there are many alt cert candidates here

We started state testing today with my kiddos taking their FSA Writing. It is the first time I have seen them in school as they are a digital class, and such an amazing experience to see them together as they talked amongst themselves before we went to the classroom to test. You can see how much they miss being together. ❤

Why do some companies ask for 8+ YoE + MBA for mid-management positions (Manager, Sr. manager, Associate, Sr. Associate). At 8 YoE the super talented people would probably be looking for director level roles. Wouldn’t it be better to get them at like 3-5YoE?

How do you deal with draining family members? My wonderful mother takes on a LOT to keep the family life running back home (across the country with matters that can't really be helped from afar). She's stressed and every time we chat it's just an endless swell of negativity and problems - we all have our own issues and just having to listen can drain me for the week. She blows through boundaries because she needs to vent and I'm not sure how to protect my energy and still be supportive. Ideas?

I graduated in May 2020 and found myself excepting a Junior Art Director position in Healthcare. I never saw myself in health but with many agencies having hiring freezes I decided to get some experience and save up some money in the meantime. Fast forward one year; I’ve added a new campaign to my website and I’m starting to apply to consumer agencies again. Any tips to help me make the transition? Any place to avoid? Who have you noticed is hiring again? Thanks in advance :)

I feel like I’m not learning anything at my internship. It’s easy work and good pay though. Should I try to take on another project or multiple to try to gain more experience? But I was told it’ll be much harder and I would be expected to work longer hours and managers will be rough on me. Is this worth it when I go to school full-time as well while trying to balance a part time job? (The internship at D is expected to be part time but they might make me work more).
