Has anyone here visited the Western Colorado wineries? I’m heading to the area soon and am curious to know if wine grown at 10,000 ft is worth trying.

I’ve never heard of Colorado wine but if you’re going to be there anyways, might as well give it a try and let us know if there are any gems

Reporting back: they definitely have some distinctive terroir and do some cold hardy grapes quite well. Cab franc seems to be the most popular though. However, a lot of the wines lack balance which I would generally attribute to a lack of winemaking professionalism. Most of the winemakers seem to either be locals trying their hand at it or people coming from the craft beer scene, not many people with quality winemaking training. Had a few tasting associates not even be able to tell me which grapes were in their blends.

Tried this Santorini retailing for $40. Very concentrated but can’t say I was blown away by it. Volcanic terroir dominates almost to the point of obscurity, and it had strong lemon notes, hints of quince, and sea salt. It clashed with Mexican food (hey I knew that beforehand but didn’t think it would clash THAT bad, and usually pair Mexican with Riesling or Gewürztraminer) but I’m going to Greece soon and wanted to drink Greek wine. I drank half at a BYOB, took the bottle home(cont’d)

Had a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc with bracingly high acidity situated in the Touraine appellation. Very much a food wine (or a pallet cleanser). Menthol undertones and characteristic grapefruit.
