Ooooo good question !
It seems much more common to go from PA to a non-attorney IRS job, like revenue agent. Perhaps there is some way to internally transfer to an attorney position after getting your foot in the door. It seems quite difficult to get on as an IRS attorney in general unless you do the IRS Honors Program during law school. Maybe someone on here will have some insight!
If you’re interested in going to the IRS (technical branch), I recommend you reach out to your national tax office which usually houses former IRS people. Several of them went from PA or a law firm to IRS and then came back. Frankly, a huge part of it is networking just to find the opportunities, but they are out there. You will still need to go through the application and selection process, but your application could be shepherded through. I e worked with several people who have gone that route. For local attorneys, it’s possible to get in as well, but you will need to network and make sure to demonstrate you have the skills. Consider applying to the DOJ Tax Division as well, as you can move to a local position after fulfilling your commitment.
This is great advice. Thank you!
