You might look into a tour of duty from the US to UK as those by default provide a route back. What’s possible depends on how your firm is structured, what it offers for international mobility, your business case and immigration status. Note that generally you’ll get paid in your firm’s UK salary bands, which for consulting tend to be much lower than the US.
You might get more specific advice if you’re willing to post which firm you work for in case a colleague has done similar.
Yes, with my my old firm I transferred US —> London —> US. As PwC 1 mentions, it all really depends on the firm you are with, how they’re structured, your role, etc. They are also right that salary bands were lower (at least in my experience too).
Since you mention grad school, would you be working while studying as well? There are likely rules around that too and what the company will / will not allow or provide in terms of support.
@SM1 thank you, I am indeed aiming to switch firms, and what you wrote was extremely helpful. Will definitely have to do more research! I unfortunately don't have work authorization there, so that may be another hurdle.
