Has anyone in big cities (NYC, Chicago, etc.) tried to get out of their lease assuming they have somewhere in the suburbs to escape to? I don’t see our industry being in an office in the near future given the ease of transition to remote work. If so, how have you done it (and yes I understand a lease is a legally binding contract). It feels like I am just throwing money down the drain.

I had literally 10 friends do the thing where they pay twice the rent, break the lease, and move with their parents. I thought it was a little dramatic at the time but ultimately they are saving money rather than living in NYC with no city life. The next 12 months are going to be where city life gradually makes modifications - it’s gonna take way longer than a few months. And obviously we don’t go to offices much since we’re consulting. Last resort option but worth considering

Mine in NYC was up for renewal and I kindly asked what accomodations they could make. They didn't raise my rent and added a 60-day cancellation rider. Just ask, they're all more flexible right now because they'd rather not have an empty unit on the market during a pandemic.

Each state has their own laws, some may allow you if you lose your job. You could try subleasing

like

Did this in Chicago. The laws there strongly favor the resident. You can meet with an attorney that can help you get out of a lease there. You might get a little cash for your trouble too if they find any issue with the lease.
