I feel like some of these issues are dealt with my appropriate delegation. I feel that when I’m busy I’ll miss things, so I get a junior lawyer / paralegal help me and raise questions about things. Might not be 100% right when you get it back, but it’s at least 80% of the way there.
Totally understand though, it’s a hard perception to overcome. I had the same feeling at a previous firm and found that by consistently showing up and at least giving some effort, people are accepting of flaws.
I really appreciate this perspective. A lot of the issues did in my view stem from partners’ lack of management at the outset — setting unrealistic deadlines and expectations, creating fire drills when it is not truly necessary, etc., but that obviously didn’t keep the higher ups from developing their perception about me (so I think). I should then delegate to help mitigate some of that for sure. Thanks for this!

I get it, but I think you’re being overly sensitive. Some folks are just always critical. 250 hours is busy enough to mention in passing but you can be pretty sure they already know. How senior are you?
6th year. Apparently, I was doing work for a couple partners at that time who are notoriously difficult to work for and whom associates have left because of. It was constant negative feedback in a series of several emails. I would have chalked it up to working for a critical person or two (one is at least high up there in my group), but it was apparently bad enough that I got spoken to about areas I needed to improve on. I had a good attitude about it but since then, it feels like there has been a shift.

Style feedback is pretty typical when you first start working with someone. Is there more to the story? Was this very recently?
Yeah it’s been tough! Could be paranoia, but I feel what I feel which only makes it tougher. It’s crazy bc at all of my last jobs, they fought to keep me, and I was among the highest performers in every way. I kept getting staffed bc my work was preferred. But in this new environment all of a sudden, I’m somehow not up to par. It’s mostly a couple partners who everyone on my team tends to have an issue with, but they are people of influence. Another partner has come to me to say I have no idea what’s happening with others bc they thought I have done everything everything above and beyond and have been so impressed. I really think it’s circumstantial, and it was a bad few months/timing. However, I’m also trying to be realistic about the situation if the tides have changed on me and what to expect from it. This helps. Thank you!
