Has anyone lateraled and felt like they started off on the wrong foot but then improved their reputation? I’m in lit. and got staffed on a a few complicated, high stakes cases that were far along & I was spread too think (~250 hours my first real month at the firm). I didn’t do anything wrong per se but got some negative feedback on my briefs which I perceived to be more “style” than anything else, but I feel like they have now made up their mind on me. Never had negative feedback before!

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

What are your favorite time entry tips and tricks? I’m going into my second year and I feel like I suck at it. How do you write your entries to maximize your billable time—reading/drafting emails, internals calls, crying about a deadline?

Is anyone else out there really struggling with typos, section references, or things like that? I’m doing everything one is supposed to do (print out, read loud, triple checking, etc.) but still can’t get everything right. I’m a mid-level and I work with one partner quite often (and even more frequently in the last 6 mos). I used to think he was great - he takes time to mentor and train and is generally nice, but lately I’ve started getting annoyed b/c he just expects me to work on weekends/late nights when not necessarily warranted (just b/c he does), and the more I work with him I’ve realized how disingenuous their thank you’s are. Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.
