Has anyone left big law to go in house in the middle of their second year (corporate associate)? Looking back, so you think it was a good move? Do you wish you stuck it out a little longer in Big Law?

Someone leaving in their second year of practice is unlikely to have enough experience to answer this question well and without significant hindsight bias.

That is a very good point.

I left in my second year, and while i think everything the previous responders said has at least some truth to it, i could not be happier with my choice. I got my life back, am not making much less than biglaw people (the gap wil grow significantly, but no way i was going to stay to be a 4th-6th year anyways), the people i work with are all nice, and there are a bunch of other pluses.

I will say that I lucked out and looking back on it, a bunch of the other options (not all) I had looked into would have been a terrible choice.

like

Other ones (with some exceptions) were incredibly dead end and lower salary. I was juggling a few options when i chose this current one and at that point they were all good options, but when I interviewed as someone a bit more junior the options were just not good

2 years of practice is not much to go off on I think. Get some more experience first and see where it can take you. Good luck!

It is a difficult decision. Depends on work balance preference. Anyhow, I would hang longer in the in-house role to gain more experience. Also you don’t want to appear as someone who jumps around.

I left in the middle of my third year and I think that’s about as early as you feasibly can leave without hurting yourself.

Statistically speaking, the majority of hiring is after 3 years of experience (roughly 4-7 years).

You will have more options after 3 and competition is good for the consumer.

Obviously exceptions apply but as a broad based rule of thumb to think critically against with your circumstances…there y’a go
