Has anyone made a mistake that prevented a deal from closing before? Did the partners blacklisted you from future deals? Did you get fired? So anxious and don’t know what to do…

Shit happens, kiddo. What did you do? Whatever it is, I highly doubt it was all your fault. When folks want to close, they close. Everything can be a post closing covenant (or just waived) if the parties are motivated enough.

I’ve made a major mistake in the last year that was uncovered by client - didn’t delay closing (yay for 30 day HSR waiting periods!), but did cause additional work to fix between signing and closing. Once it was identified, I did all the review necessary to figure out why it happened, owned up to it as the lead (can’t blame junior people or specialists), and worked to summarize scope of mistake and potential liability and more importantly the practical implications and how to approach opposing party about it. Got rave reviews on the deal and still work with those partners. Mistakes happen, especially when people are spread so thin and working so hard. It depends entirely on how you approach it and that you learn from it. Everyone will work with you based on your track record, not a single mistake (unless you tried to cover it up or something!).

How did your partner fail to catch such a huge mistake with enough time to save it prior to closing?

like

Not your fault. I hope the partner learns from his or her mistake. Can’t be lazy like that.

What happened?

You’re a junior? A partner or at least someone more senior should have been providing oversight, esp if this is a new group for you. For what it’s worth, if this partner is so MIA, maybe you don’t want to work with this partner as a junior

like

I’d consider you a junior until at least January. I think you’re fine/you can relax. You were in an unfair situation

like

At the end of the day, it’s the partner’s matter. They should be managing juniors in a way that prevents major problems from occurring.

like

Like killed the deal or delayed closing a few days? Thats a huge distinction and not clear what prevented means here. Closing is delayed by legal holdups all the time.

like

Co-signed. A mistake that delays closing by a few days sucks but happens to everyone. Literally EVERYONE.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the responses! It made me feel less anxious. I haven’t heard back from the partner after I talked to them and hoping things will be okay.

I left KPMG after 7 years after being passed over for Director promotion. I left to start a medical business. 3 months in, my partner and I grossed $130K in sales w/ a 60% margin. Consulting prepared us for this and I’m forever grateful for my experience. I’m honestly amazed at how well consulting skills translate to entrepreneurship. I’m sharing this to encourage anyone who’s been on the fence about starting their own thing. Go for it. Consulting will always be there if you need to fall back.
