Has anyone made a switch in their career and hated it or felt out of place? I recently transitioned from consumer to corporate comms. (agency side) and a lot of the work is going over my head. I was so great at consumer and fearing I made a horrible mistake. Even worse it’s making me feel like I may not have been any good in the first place. Any advice to combat this?

I left big corporate for a purpose-driven startup a few years ago, but I lasted only a few months. I loved the culture and my (mostly much younger) colleagues, but the founders were Stanford b-school grads with very little experience in the work world and no experience in marketing who theoretically wanted me to lead Brand. Instead it turned out they wanted a D2C product marketer (which I’m not), but they didn’t know it. They expected 3 years’ worth of wins in 5 months and were certain they knew marketing better than I after my 25 years of experience. I wasn’t able to combat their perception that I wasn’t a good marketer; in fact it took me years to recover my confidence. But I did learn that you should bail quickly in this situation. Don’t try to make it work. It’s probably unworkable.

What were your next steps after the startup or what would you recommend thank you!

Why did you switch in the first place? If that reason is still valid thenI would give it time. What are you struggling with most and can you find a peer to ask all your noob questions to? Corporate comms goals, audiences and tactics can look very different so naturally you’re going to feel a bit behind until you get more seasoned.

Thanks! I made the switch because it was first positioned as a corpsumer role, not just corporate and I found it important to expand my knowledge. Now that I’m in it for a few months, all aspects of consumer went away and it’s now heavy ESG, sustainability, and executive visibility - 3 areas that are completely foreign to me. I’m struggling more with the fact that I don’t know very much about ESG, environment, and CSR. Being really honest, I don’t have a strong interest either. Feeling stuck though because I love where I work, I just hate the pieces of business I’m on.

I’ve found myself in a similar position (different subject matter). Curious to hear advice from others as well!

I moved from hardcore tech to corporate/financial comms a few years back and found there was an adjustment period for sure. When changing product/tech/brand side to corporate/financial/crisis - the account approach, management style, client sensitivities, etc. change quite a bit… so you’re either going to learn and appreciate it or reject and move on.

like

It went for about a year - when I was faced with a project that I had to approach very differently for a corp client as I would’ve for a tech client. It helped to keep eyes and ears truly open - see how other colleagues tackle certain scenarios and conversations with clients, check-in with colleagues and be more collaborative, take more time to assess how to position opportunities/sensitivities, etc. Basically, there are nuances of each focus area, it’s important to integrate that into your thinking - and it’s easier said than done.
