I work with very technical products at google cloud...none of my PMs come from mbb. I don't think mbb is actually a very good starting point of you want to be a product mgr for a technical product. The level of technical detail about why certain tech / design decisions cannot be made by people that don't have a deep technical background

likeupliftinghelpful

That makes sense. I don’t anticipate going into a technical PM role, although most of my work has been in product or IT working with PMs and product departments

Your best bet is Amazon, which has a dedicated product management role for non technical people, very clearly separated from the technical product manager role. It’s also objectively the worst culture of the bunch, but it would be a starting point for you to transition into the tech space as a PM. The others will very likely not weigh your experience heavily, as they generally look for technical backgrounds in their PMs. Your background would be better suited to strategy roles at those companies, where they exist.

Thank you for this! Apologies for the late reply. I’ve actually started down the path of carving out opportunities in product so that the next year will be fantastic no matter what. Past that I’ve expanded my search to customer insights, go to market strategy, and product org and product dev. I really appreciate all the advice, this has been incredibly helpful to get a better sense of what the market actually looks like.

You may want to do product strategy or product operations and use that as a doorway into PM. That way, you will widen the target companies (e.g., Facebook, Google etc).

It depends on the level. I have seen a lot of McK EM land L6 at Google for $360-$370K TC. I am a 2nd year EM and evaluating offers in ProdOps/ProdStrategy for $360K and above. @OP: DM me and I can share my experience. Just wrapped up recruiting.

We hire plenty of non technical PMs

Thank you to both of you. This is very helpful. I would obviously be coming from a business background so knowing there are opportunities outside of just the technical roles is very encouraging. I am starting to build out my target company list, research PM interviews, and build my interview strategy, so understanding that technical prowess is not a requirement is a helpful insight

like

An option you can consider is joining an earlier stage startup to do strategy, which ends up becoming very similar to PM. You'll likely end up getting roped into PM if growth is fast enough too. Just my experience so far though

like

In my experience early stage startups don’t have strategy roles. BizOps roles yes, but the work is very far from strategy

What tech skills/experience do you have?

I mentioned this in the below post, but I specialize in TMT and have worked primarily with PMs on go-to-market or customer success work. As a side note, I almost took an offer at Amazon out of B-school for a PM gig. Friends seem to like the culture

I work primarily in Tech, Media, and Telecom and do most of my work in either IT or working on product (e.g. customer insights, go-to-market strategy, product development)

Hey! I’m a self-contained teacher for grades K-2.
