Cutting your housing expenses by half is a no brainer. A better school for your daughter is the cherry on top. You should move already.

If you're open to long commutes and/or remote work, it's well worth it IMO

OP, just, at the very least, make sure you’re near an airport with high frequency of flights I would think?

What are of the country are you in? I moved from Chicago to Cleveland a couple years ago. I sold a 1br condo in Chicago for more than I bought my 5br house in Cleveland. Huge upgrade and I don’t regret it. At times I miss the city life, but then with a young family at home (and now with COVID) the money to life in a H/MCOL city just wasn’t worth it. Maybe think about finding a more affordable city as a whole vs assuming you need to go rural.

We're in Chicago as well, about six years professionally now. Want to move to Peoria area. I can buy a 4BR cheaper than our 1BR. Our daughter is only 9 months but we would like one more child and space is tight. My wife has a lot of friends in the city and I promised we'd visit 1-2 weekends a month and hotel it on Saturday nights.

Why is this even a question? If your employer truly doesn't care where you're at, then it shouldn't affect progression at all. I'd you leave your current firm, you may need to move back to a city, but by then you should have a bucket of money saved to make a substantial down payment on a house to keep your monthly housing cost lower. Boom.

That is my biggest worry as promotions are much slower at my smaller firm than industry. I'm a tech consultant who travels 75-100%, so up until COVID, I was gone all week anyways. I'm curious if I applied to similar high travel roles (B4, etc.) in the future if I would be able to maintain a remote arrangement?

30 years later, I’m still in recovery from Catholic school

The public schools in the small town I'm looking at are terrible. We'll have to take our chances.
