Has anyone moved from EA to any other role, and how did you do it? How did you prepare yourself? Was it mostly networking? I’ve found that being competent isn’t enough for some reason. I feel so pigeonholed.

Hi! I was an EA for 5 years before being offered a new position. I think recommendations/referrals for a position helps, which requires you to build relationships. I received great feedback through my years as an EA, did my best to not just do the bare minimum. Be sure to relationships with executives and their team. It helped to communicate and work with my executives team. At one point, I was working with a senior on the team for a project. A few months later his department was hiring and he referred me because he was impressed by my work. I spoke with my executive about it first (not that I needed his approval but out of respect since I was applying for a role sent by someone on his team). He was extremely supportive and provided his input to the hiring manager. I applied for the role and am now a senior associate.

Currently interviewing for another role, I’m close with the hiring manager and was told to apply. I also volunteer to help when needed with their activities, and used that as networking leverage.

That’s great! I literally do all the things. My EOY review is always VERY good. I’ve always gotten the top marks. I mentor, I train and onboard, I help with events, I have volunteered my time to other departments all while supporting someone very senior who is very happy with me. I make it a point to go into the office so that people SEE me. Sigh. I just feel defeated lately, but I know I can’t give up bc the right opportunity could come tomorrow. I just wondered if anyone else had success with some other method!

Hi! I was an EA for 6 years before I changed roles. But before that I did everything like take on special projects, got a PACE certified, literally did anything I could to show them I’m worthy. Took on any task big or small! I did this all while also pursuing my degree in business. It wasn’t until I was a month shy from graduating that I was offered another position with another company that paid about 20k more doing EA work that my company finally realized they didn’t want to lose me and countered to keep me. Matching the new salary and offering me a position in management. My degree really opened up opportunities for me and put me in a position where my company saw my value.

I think networking is the only way to move out of this role. For instance, if you support a tax executive, you could setup a coffee chat and express to him your interest in his field. If he is a good leader, he'd be happy to mentor you and provide coaching and teach you stuff you need to know and even help you get an entry level position in tax if he is the hiring manager. If you have potential and ability , executive will help you. Now keep in mind that not all leaders will want you to move out of EA role when you are good at it.
If you feel you are not able to progress or pivot to something else within your company , look outside. Although, it is always easier to do lateral move within company.
A university degree can also help. But I've seen some EAs within Deloitte switch to consulting with just a certificate or zero bachelor degrees or a bachelor degree in something like Political science, communication

I was a EA for 3 years and now am an HR analyst where I perform mid level duties.

I was an admin assistant and through networking got a job as an EA.

Within 5 months of starting I was given the option to write my position and so I added facilities manager and office manager to my title.

The way I learned was because people literally brought their problems to me to solve. Also in the past, I would volunteer to job shadow people in the areas I wanted to pivot and volunteer on projects for them. Also somewhere on this thing I posted all the training I've done over the years that prepared me.

Up until this year all my jobs in the last 20 years has been because someone I knew hired me. This is the first time in 2 decades I'm "cold interviewing". However I utilize every damn job to gain more skills to be smarter than 50% of my coworkers to maintain my reputation of people giving me jobs.

Hi All! Going through previous posts, I can see it is hard to get a comment/connection in this particular bowl. Reasonably so, as the field in itself is so hectic that professionals are usually busy. Anyway, I’m looking for a job switch and want to get into IB for an MNC. If there’s anyone who has any open position in their team, I’ll be grateful if you can refer me. Thanks in anticipation!

We both love that he is getting enough sleep and well rested on one hand. On the other hand, we are now wondering if he is sleeping way too much.. contd…

I applied to work for my dream company as an EA and the interview process was going well. They loved me but did not think I was a good fit for the role I applied for. They did however think I would be a good fit for another role opening up in a few weeks. I expressed that I was open to the role but I have not heard back since. It has been about a month. Should I give up on my dream company or trust the process? I have reached out twice so far.
