Consulting

Has anyone moved into a Chief of Staff type of role? Ready to leave consulting and thinking that could be a good fit. Getting tired of consistent night and weekend work.

Depends on the exec you will support as COS . Some are hard charging global leaders and it will be worse than consulting

Roles are super variable. So make sure it’s not EA-equivalent

I would think a CoS role would still have night and weekend work of the person you are supporting works nights and weekends

I had a buddy who started as a CoS to the CEO of a seed-funded startup and 3 years later is now the CSO. I’m targeting the same route. But he pointed out what a lot of people here are saying - it’s all about who you’re supporting and if they’re invested in you

I was previously recruited for some CoS roles, but turned them down. I think if it’s for someone you’re quite familiar with and have subject matter expertise ... could be a decent fit. But for me, coming from a completely different firm, it wasn’t the right gig. Also, it’s quite difficult to get out from CoS to a division head if that’s something you eventually want to do as opposed to going to CoS from some other exec. Doesn’t hurt interviewing / learning more.

It’s a very common promotion route in IBM

You'll likely be working nights and weekends if it's a CoS role worth having. Do it for the knowledge growth not the hours.

Just don’t be a CoS for an university. Was the graduate assistant for the President of my university and the CoS was my direct boss. He had to deal with a lot of shit everyday from crazy trustees, students, parents, etc. His day was basically 8 am-5 pm but there was always some drama and still is

You need to push back more if you’re consistently working weekends. Nights are common but not all weekends. Maybe once a month.

If anyone wants to join a boutique HR & Talent Advisory consulting firm, Kincentric is hiring for an Associate Partner role! Location doesn’t really matter, but preferably in IL, NY, or ATL.
