Has anyone moved over from a gen lit group at a firm to in-house? Wondering how that move happens, though I understand it’s tougher than if one was working in corporate or even employment.

I did. There was a learning curve with respect to some corporate matters, but not insurmountable. I’ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to broaden my practice, and I do not at all miss the grind of litigation or firm life.

Agree with C1. It’s harder to move in-house if you’re a litigator though it’s doable (I did it). Leverage the firm’s existing clients and your network to land a spot. Then once you’re in-house, move beyond litigation into compliance, HR, and other areas in which a litigation mindset is useful.

Under IFRS 15, would revenue recognition for like amazon or some ecommerce company occur only when the product is delivered? I’m a little jnclear in this especially considering instances where mayne customers pay for shipping through a third party, but ultimately they pay the merchant who deals with that 3rd party

Got an offer as a business operations senior analyst at a database software company. The role is hybrid and in NYC. TC - base 135K and RSUs of 120K over four years.
Is this a good offer for NYC?

AWS Professional Services Principal level salary? I think it’s level 7. I gave an expected range of $325-350k. I’m at $250 now. Was I in the right ballpark? Or did I undersell myself.

Anyone move to the “burbs” recently? We’re having such a hard time narrowing down where to look. Leesburg would be the furthest we would go out to, but ideally Arlington/Alexandria/Fairfax area. Budget $750k 3br 2bath and minimal immediate Renos needed. I feel like it’s impossible to find anything and it’s so discouraging. Total income $350k annually.

So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP

This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Any insight on what everyone else does?

Hi, everyone. Wondering if you can help me?… The Partner at my firm is asking me for a list of Plaintiff law firm conferences. I used to work for the Defense, so I know about all of those conferences but I’m really stumped as to how to find the Plaintiff side conferences. We mainly do class action and mass tort. Any advice for me as to how to find them? Know of any? Thank you so much!

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

As a new associate, just having graduated and taken the bar, what expectations do you have for the work you will handle in a transactional practice you are joining... In the first few days, first few months and the end of your first year?

I’m an associate at a boutique law firm working on complex litigation and regulatory matters. I’ve worked at the same firm as a summer associate and the last three years directly after graduation. I’m worried that I’m not getting enough “practical” experience. I haven’t taken a deposition, only attended two oral arguments, and tend to write parts of briefs or motions but never in their entirety. (Continued in comments)

Trying to fill out my first ever conflicts form and I cannot remember any of my clients at a previous firm. Current firm didn’t need that info when I was hired. Can I ask the old firm’s HR for that info? I’m also worried about confidentiality because I haven’t gotten an official offer yet and I know certain attorneys from my current firm now work at the old firm.

Anyone ever experience a firm significantly misrepresenting a position they hired you for? I recently took a position with a firm to practice a specific type of litigation. Turns out the firm only has about 5 cases in that field and they are all already staffed up. Now I’m stuck at a firm I barely like doing work that’s completely irrelevant to my experience and career goals, and I feel like leaving within a year is a bad look resume wise

I am at a very small firm (<10 attorneys) and am “interviewing” with a larger firm. Considering partner and counsel roles. Beyond compensation structure, billable requirements, and partnership expectations, what questions should I ask? If considering partner position, what is fair to ask about their books?
