Is that negotiable? I thought federal roles were pretty much a fixed formula thing comp wise
Yes - you can absolutely negotiate. Jumping GS levels is usually difficult without some very good backup (ie you’re a GS 10 but have a masters degree and a few years of experience then you can likely jump up to 11). Steps within the GS bracket are very easily negotiable. You just, again, have to back it up. Basically they will match your current pay so will need to see your most recent pay stubs.
Think outside the box as well, you may be able to ask for a recruitment bonus or PTO adjustment. Again, you need to have something to back up the request (I.e. years of experience equal to the accrual level you’re requesting)
There's different GS levels and corresponding steps to get to the base salary, so wondering if you can negotiate for a higher step that would align with higher base salary. However not sure if possible
Thanks for the insight PwC 1
Yes—negotiate! You can ask for salary match, time off match, and signing bonus. Don’t expect any or all, but definitely worth asking for. Also, wait until you’re called after background—they are more willing to negotiate then.
Agree with this expect that you need to tell them at the time of accepting the conditional offer that you want to negotiate. If you don’t say something while accepting the conditional, you might be SOL. The conversation internally is very lengthy and will take the time that you’re in background phase. They will reach out when your background phase is wrapping up and that’s when you’ll need to lay out all your requests and reasons for those requests. Definitely ask! They will try to work with you as much as feasible
How was your interview? I’d think it would be quite tough and ask questions to stump you
The interview was a bit tough, but if you familiarize yourself with the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method of interviewing it'll help prepare you! Alot of behavioral and situational questions were asked, but overall my experience was great.
OP - I agree with FOA 1 and Deloitte 1’s comments. I went through this same process recently and was able to negotiate as such. DM if you want to discuss more.
Did you end up accepting their offer?
Not likely. It’s the government. Very structured.
Not private sector. Totally different. Not known for competitive pay.
