If the dog is outside most of the time, I would definitely spay her. Dogs will be able to smell her from a mile away when she's in heat.
If you don’t mind having to buy doggy britches to control the hot mess she will make when in heat and also dealing with hormonal moods….Nobody can force you to spay but it is the responsible thing to do and also the best health wise for your pup! As a former dog rescue worker and advocate please think about it, there are way too many dogs and puppies in the world just discard and euthanized due to unintended breeding, as well as just as many from intentional breedings. Good luck ! There are resources for low cost spaying in many areas look into it if finances are an issue, saving up for it make take a little time as well but this should be a priority even if it means sacrificing some regular expenses like going out less or expenses that are really necessary. It’s just part of taking on the responsibility of owning a pet, just like regular things like vet care and good quality food. Just have the mindset if I adopted or bought this pup I owe it to them to take care of them the right way😁
Obligatory dog pic tax :). She is so not not interested in posing lol.
Spaying reduces risk of uterine or ovarian cancer. Also, it’s the responsible thing to do to avoid unintended puppies.
Depending where you got the dog, it could be a breach of contract to not spay her.
Please please please spay your dog
Yeah, it was required for my dogs by contract, and they both got spayed/neutered (one girl and one boy) at about 6 months old. They are both fine - did not notice any difference in quality of life.
My son recently dog sat in unspayed dog. He said she was a bloody mess.
One of our dogs is spayed and the other isn’t. They were originally planned to be spayed the same day but the one that isn’t required emergency surgery so she got that instead. She had to have a few more surgeries after that and due to that, we have not gotten her spayed as we feel it’d be too much for her. We think she’s fine! She’s a golden and super mellow, much more calm than our other dog. While she is in heat, she does bleed a little but not as bloody as other comments would suggest (every dog is different?). She is in heat about every six months and you can see the blood drops but it’s not in piles or anything. We also are very careful not to let male dogs near her as we don’t want her having any puppies. Had it not been for the surgery we would have gotten her spayed, but now that she’s getting older we won’t do it. As far as quality of life, both dogs are about 4 and so I can’t comment on if ones more at risk for a disease, etc. besides what you research, but in our case she is fine so far.
Thanks everyone for the input - just to clarify our dog is a mastiff/great dane. She had her first period now, she's an outside acreage dog the mess part isn't a big deal. I read that they have their period every six months to one year so the frequency will be low. Last time we kept her in our shop when we weren't around to keep her by herself. There are coyotes so not exactly looking for coyote dane pups but we think if it's a 1-2 times a year it might be manageable. The nearest neighbours w dogs are kilometers away. There are coyotes. I don't want to down play the risk of pups and especially not dane-yotes lol, I have seen online there is an obscure dog IUD product but our vet office didn't know anything of it and had no particular comments. Honestly I'd like to go that way if I understood it a little better, just trying to imagine my dog's health like my own, if I were responsible for my reproductive health what is the optimal solution that works in the long term. Abstinence carries risk of pups if you're not careful. Spaying I'm trying to understand the hormonal implications to maximize her health (the current plan is at 2 years). And IUD is obscure and I don't know who would even locally offer the service. Just trying to do my research ahead of time - thanks all!
Because she is an acreage dog, I'd go the spaying route. Like others mentioned it's crazy what a male will do to get to her, and there's always the risk of a wondering stray. I live near a mix of suburbs and rural, and it's always the farm dogs that end up with the unplanned litters of puppies in my experience.
