Has anyone on here gone in house and then returned to their prior firm? I’d feel much better about accepting an in-house offer on the table if I knew this could be done. I haven’t broached the partners I work for but I expect to make partner next year if I stay

Totally depends on the firm. At my regional firm, we have a “Boomerang” trophy. All who have lateraled and returned have their names on the trophy. I don’t think that would be the case everywhere though, and if you are about to make partner you might consider hanging on until that happens and see how you feel afterward.

I went in house and went back to big law, different firm.

2016. Took a year hair UT. Made oodles more on equity comp. Not worried re 1 year haircut.

I went in house and I love it and would never go back! Not what you asked, but if you find the right fit and if in house is something you like, you won’t want to go back.

Do your research though and find what makes sense for you. There are a ton of in house options - different size departments, different kinds of companies, different responsibilities. So if you find one and don’t love it, don’t write off all in house roles. But I’d imagine you could go back if you weren’t out of the game too long. If there’s a reason you’re leaving though, keep that in mind.

Good luck!

Thanks, yes unfortunately or fortunately I’m in a niche area of law so in-house positions are hard to find, and difficult to hire laterals at my firm. Lots to consider!!

I know this has happens somewhat frequently (particularly recently with a lot of boomerang moves both from other firms and in-house) at K&E. Of course it depends a lot on what kind of terms you leave on.

like

I think I’d leave on good terms- it would be for a lifestyle the firm cannot offer me, for a slight reduction in current pay. This company is fairly large and established so not sure I could steer their business to my firm

like

Yes. Can be done. I’m not the only one I’ve heard of either. I’d expect partnership to be pushed back a few years (but not off the table) if you do this.

like

I know a very successful partner who did this. I think she was in house about 3 years before returning to a firm - a different firm though.

like

Do you have a book?

I have a couple clients of my own and several others that would likely go with me if I went to a different firm. I’m in a niche area where having a book isn’t key to making partner at my firm or others with this practice group
