Has anyone on here switched from big law to working for a real estate developer? Thoughts on whether the latter has more interesting work?

Following. As a real estate finance associate this seems like the only in-house option for me

I have a friend who did this. Went from working in biglaw capm group to working for a real estate developer. Work is way better/more interesting but hours are long (around 12 hour days) and pay is lower. For him, it is worth it because he really wants to be a developer.

I worked at large firms before going it alone and have used several of the major doc management systems. Thanks!

I don’t know if I’ll ever get the courage to go back to a high pressure high paying job again but I do want to. I was so stressed out and miserable before. So I kind of took a break by taking it slow and got a different job. The plan was to recharge and go back. After a few mos, I’m missing the projects and sense of accomplishment, also the environment and people. I have the opportunity to go back to that sort of work again, but I don’t know

Did anyone start out in BigLaw and absolutely hate it after 6 months but grow to enjoy the job or at least not mind it? I’m really not enjoying the job but hoping things will get better. The idea of staying more than a couple years feels like a fantasy at this point, but I’m wondering if maybe a switch could get flipped.

I’d love to hear about the careers of anyone using their law degree in an “atypical” way - not practicing as a lawyer, or a lawyer in a way many wouldn’t think of? I’m in my third year at a mid-size firm and realized quickly that I have no desire to have a billable hour requirement for my whole career. Interested in hearing paths others have taken!

I’m a 2017 associate in NYC biglaw. I logged approx. 2300 billable hours in 2019. Is that light, normal or heavy in the biglaw market for RE associates at my level? Thanks in advance for thoughts.

There is almost nowhere to find reliable bonus information on Canadian firms. I’ve heard of year end bonuses ranging from 10-50% this year (not including Covid bonuses). Let’s start a thread posting year of call, rough billable hours worked and bonus as a percent of salary.

5 year call. 1850 hours. 10%.

Does anyone have experience working for a ALSP? How does compensation work (pay and benefits)? Are you an employee or technically an IC? Do you have billable requirements like at a firm? How do you think it prepared you to potentially move in house? I'm currently at a firm but thinking of taking a position with an ALSP but my goal is to go in house.

My firm flaunts about being involved in the community and giving back. Offices across the country do a day of service where attys and staff do community service. There is a fee/cost for the volunteer activities and the attys are responsible for paying for it.

Now I strongly believe in donating for different causes but this seems strange that a big firm that flaunts about giving back can’t even pay for the meager volunteer cost for each office. Is this normal at other firms?

What is your typical total time “working” vs. time billed? I think I must be doing something wrong, because I’m having 12 hour days but only billing 7-8 hours/day. I can’t block bill so I lose a lot of time switching between tasks and reading random emails and don’t want to put down a million .1s for reading emails, but still seems weird to be losing so much time. I’ll take quick breaks throughout the day but nothing I’d expect to total more than hour. At a loss here.
