Has anyone planned an African safari? Feeling overwhelmed and priced out. Not that I’m trying to be cheap, but I got a quote for 10 days for $13k per person. Is this type of trip doable for 10-12 days for 5-7k pp? What’s the best way to plan it? Any companies thst anyone has experience with? Please send help 😩

10 days for a safari is very long IMO. I did one for 3 days and felt that was plenty, combined with some other activities in the area and city sightseeing. My safari was 3 days in Masai Mara for $1.2k pp. It wasn’t the luxurious option by any means but was all inclusive with food and transport, very comfortable lodging, etc

It should never cost that much and you don’t need that many days

For those that say 10 days is too much. This would be for multiple parks and travel between. For example, there is Rwanda, and then Tanzania and Kenya. Also Uganda. Not saying I would like to hit all, but some combination which I would imagine would take some time.

We did 10 days in Uganda for about $3k per person back in Jan. 2021 through a group called Paradise Adventure Vacations. Did not include flights but did include pretty much everything else. I got quotes from different safari companies and they were the cheapest, but the other ones were still reasonable as well. Our trip included gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, visit to a rhino sanctuary, a couple Nile boat rides, and some normal game drives among other activities. I know Uganda probably isn’t first choice for safaris but we went there for the gorillas!

You just missed a JW Masai Mara award pricing error where it was 20k points/night including meals and game drives. It’s a new, boutique tented camp property. Still might be a good option as I’ve seen it around 120k points/night (vs $3500/night in cash). The &Beyond properties are great too. Worth checking out Ngorongoro Crater and Masai Mara if you’ll be in Masai during the great migration. You could also go trekking for silverback gorillas in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda if you have the time (they’re awesome). And trekking for chimps and rafting in the Nile in Uganda are lots of fun too.

Still not bad in points! There’s a chance I have an extra five-night award reservation at the JW in August or September (I made two reservations planning to use one and cancel one)

That’s a lot! I recommend focusing on one country vs. multiple. For Kenya - I recommend Tekko Tours. 5-6 days would be my recommendation if you’re really into photography or wildlife.

Ok so what I’m gathering is that all you need is a few days in the park and then a few days in Nairobi for example.

What about doing Masai Mara for 2-3 nights and then gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda for a few nights and then head back to the US.

Or do you still suggest to pick one or the other?

Gorilla trekking is crazy expensive. I believe it’s $1,500 per person per day (Rwanda government). If you are trying to bring the cost down focus on one country. It depends on what you are looking for but there are multiple parks in each country (eg amboselli and Masai Mara in Kenya). If you wanted beach you could do Zanzibar in Tanzania or Diani beach in Kenya. I would not go less than 3 nights in Masai.

Thank you. I am realizing it’s best to focus on one area as you mentioned. For example, maybe a Kenya trip to Nairobi, Masai Mara, and maybe that beach area you mentioned.

Another question - Masai Mara or Serengeti? In other words, focus on Tanzania or Kenya? I think that’s what my decision is coming down to.

I think 10 days is way too long. We did 2 days when I studied abroad. I can’t imagine being out there for more than 3 days
