FOR RECENT DESIGN GRADUATES:
What’s something that you wish you’d been taught / told about the design world ahead of time? (Either as just a piece of advice or insight or if there was a whole class / lecture about XYZ)

I made it to the second round of a freelance job but when I let the recruiter know that the interview went well and to keep me posted on any next steps she never got back to me. I emailed her twice after that and still no response but she has been active on LinkedIn. Should I just assume I don’t have the job? Usually all my recruiters keep me posted or tell me whether or not I’m still in the running or if they’ve heard anything so this is very strange to me.

I started a new job a month ago and I hate it! I hate the culture (there is no culture) the way that they communicate (no meetings everything in slack) and the way that they work (alone) It feels pretty much like I am freelancing and I thrive in collaborative environment. I have never felt this isolated in my whole life. It sucks.
Has anyone been in that situation? If I look for another job, should I remove that experience from my linked in? Or should I talk about that if I get interviews?

I love the company I work at but they are forcing everyone to return to office after two years working fully remote and the most successful eight quarters the company has had in years. People are leaving left and right forcing me and other team members to pick up the slack. For many reasons I do not want to return to office and they are standing firm on their policy. It has forced me to consider other opportunities. Anyone have any recommendations on remote opportunities?

Sometimes I am envious of other positions unrelated to design. Portfolios are tough, time consuming, and expensive! I’ve invested over half a k in the last two years fixing and redesigning my portfolio website, and that doesn’t include the time I put into it!

I wouldn’t change my profession in a heart beat but odd how it feels like we are the only group of professionals that has to invest money just to present our work.

Reading Fishbowl makes it so obvious why my agency both knows they need my and why creatives/account think UX is a joke. If my award tally goes up after Cannes, maybe it’s time to jump to consulting.

I managed to be hired by a really good company so naturally the impostor syndrome in me is now in full gear. Obviously, I must know things to have been hired, but I feel like there's so much I still don't know about product design. I got here through short courses and some books and articles and faking it till I made it. I am thinking to take a proper PD course now that I can afford it, if not to learn something new, then to affirm what I already know.

Thoughts on this plan of mine? Hehe

As I continue to navigate the waters surrounding my salary and YOE (23), I’m evaluating what I do in my current position. As the only designer, I enforce corporate brand standards for account comms and I do all creative things for the client: review creative briefs, conceptualize art direction (layouts, typography, color, etc) for print and web, prepare files, direct on how to make comms ADA compliant, review newsletters, etc. I don’t have a team, but am I more than a Senior Graphic Designer?
