Has anyone recently made the decision to move out of Chicago? If so, where are you moving and why? I'm most likely moving to a medium sized city in the southwest and am unsure about whether it's a good move. I'm mostly worried about what I'll miss out on. I'm moving for personal family reasons.

Yes. Don’t regret leaving one bit. Chicago is great to visit, but the city and state are so poorly run it’s not worth staying long-term for my mental and financial well-being. I do regret not leaving sooner.

I know someone moving to Houston to be closer to family, enjoy lower taxes and warm weather.

I think for folks who are ready to move to the suburbs, they may as well move to another city too. Not much to miss out on but I live in the city and may be biased. Also don’t have kids so not reviewing state-wise education curriculum.

like

Agreed, when I was young and single the city was good. Now that I'm married with kids the burbs is the way to go. I resisted it for years but being in a high rise condo with young kids is a PITA. Especially if they are high energy.

I’m moving in august! Just got tired of the weather and with work travel + covid + friends leaving, it never fully felt like home. I’m sad to leave my friends who are still there, but I think it’s the right move for me

like

Moved to the north suburbs. Schools for the kids was a major factor + in-laws nearby. Very happy with the move and not having to be on my toes all the time in the City.

Thought about moving further away but everywhere has a trade off:
San Diego - not going to have a yard for your kids to play in
Arizona - water quality/quantity + the heat.
Texas - Abbott (what he represents and the culture)

It comes down to what matters most in your life

ORD -> BNA and have never looked back!

Left to San Diego at the end of last year (after 13 years). Zero regrets, don’t miss it at all.

Moved to the south! Less taxes, cheaper, and warmer winters 🥲

Moved to AZ 3 years ago. No regrets at all.

I am a native Chicagoan (grew up in CPS and everything) and lived there my whole life. I moved to LA in 2020 because the magic of summer was lost due to the pandemic and I had a lot of friends out here. I miss it almost every day and it’s so much cheaper but I’m where I need to be rn

like

I moved to SF. Loving it so far. I originally moved for the pay but now I’m here for the outdoors.

like

I moved to the burbs so we can have more space for the kids. I miss the action of the city but it was the best choice for the family. I'm also only an hour train ride away so it's not too hard to visit. I'll probably move back once the kids move out assuming the politicians haven't burned it to the ground by then.

like

I moved to the pnw to be closer to family, avoid the weather and have a better cultural fit. No regrets

Spring time in the PNW is a well kept secret. I lived in Seattle for a year and enjoyed the weather after winter.

like

I recently moved to San Francisco because my husband got a new job that required him to be in town. Wouldn't have moved without that requirement.

Yep. Moved to the country in another Midwest state

Western burbs for land

I thought about moving to Phoenix for a good year. Went to visit again and I just realized I would rather spend the money travelling back and forth a few times. I have a very urban lifestyle preferance.

My fiancé and I are currently discussing it. Mostly due to high crime, taxes and shitty schools. Would I move to the SW? No, water rights will be a big issue in the coming months/years.

Chicago is best when you’re in your 20s living in the city and hanging with your friends. (Also nice living in a walkable/transit city)

but If you have to move to the suburbs it really looses its luster. At that point there are other cities and states which may offer more epically with remote work

Moved to Boston 4 years ago. Chicago and cook county have been in steady decline administratively and culturally for years now, only getting worse since I left.

I miss friends and experiences from the past, but every time I visit I'm so glad I left. I never thought I'd say that, but here we are.

Thoughts on the proposed JetBlue -Spirit Merger?

I used to be a big fan of Jetblue(nyc based), but lately I feel like the airline is just as bad as the low cost ones. Old aircrafts, canceled and delayed flights. I can see why it’s important for JetBlue to have this merger for their relevance in this field.

I have 32k miles with THY that are about to expire. Normally I'd go ahead and book a flight, but I can't project which countries might be locked down again 5-6 months from now (haven't accrued enough PTO to travel in near future). The only other way to keep the miles is to pay $10 per 1000 miles, as far as I know. Are there other strategies?
