Has anyone seen firms hold successful, well-received diversity/cultural events? Especially firms with low diversity numbers but an interest in increasing awareness and education without patronizing.

As an LGBTQIA* person, I have never seen any professional diversity event that wasn't absolutely out of touch with reality. It really all appears to be aimed at company image, rather than actually doing something to better diversity or create awareness

I’ll add that I am LGBT and I have appreciated my firm’s events thus far because I think even silly events increase awareness and conversation and send a message that the firm supports you. But I still want future events to be meaningful - no success stories out there?

Events are meaningless if the firm has bad numbers internally, doesn’t review and update its hiring practices as a result, and doesn’t take a serious look at what’s driving its retention problems. If none of that’s there, the events are lip service.

My firm has both events aimed at increasing awareness and minority-specific groups - which everyone is invited to attend. The thing I’m most worried about is “reverse” patronizing - i.e. such events at times go to such a length (e.g. explaining every single nuance of L,G,B,T,Q, A and + in one event/PDF) that at times it seems they’re preaching to the converted. I have no idea how to solve that, but I’d love to see more diversity.

Yes! The stretching of "diversity” seems to be such a widespread symptom of this industry’s fear of addressing the uncomfortable realities of race within it. A distraction? Very “All Lives Matter” ...

Have competing offers from EY and KPMG UK Economic advisory teams( Manager/Snr Exec level). KPMG's UK technical rep and comp offer is better, but the hours appear longer. EY UK Director has had several calls selling culture (diversity and work life balance). Is there actually a substantive emphasis on this by EY? Or are 50+ hour weeks quite common? I suspect it's going to be quite team dependent/ project dependent, and therefore a gamble in any case. Thanks for any perspectives.

Any Jewish folks here? Need help addressing a Bat Mitzvah card. The invite says “Sarah is called to the Torah as a b’nei mitzvah”. According to Google, b’nei is the plural term for boys and girls. Want to avoid assigning gender to someone I don’t know and just saying Bat (vs Bar for men). What do I say in the card… congratulations as you celebrate your Bat Mitzvah? Bnei Mitzvah? Thanks!

Fwiw looking at the bloodbath of my portfolio and crypto holding I am going to put a good chunk in to a 2 year MYGA (multi year guaranteed annuity) to save for downpayment and my hope is that in 2 year all the dust from all these thing would settle war, inflation, gas prices, crypto regulation, midterms, just the general sense of doom and gloom.
