Has anyone started yet and gone through virtual orientation at MBB? Have mine in two weeks and think it’s going to be really difficult to get the same connections with other new hires that you’re supposed to build at regular orientation

So I will say I had an in-person orientation. And I totally understand your concern about connections and all of that, but 2 years out I literally only talk to 2 people from my orientation class. Mine was a bit different because I started at a slightly off cycle time so we had folks from multiple offices together but still, your network will more and more be a function of who you work with than anything else.

Yeah, I understand the sentiment. Definitely don’t risk your health though - I’m staying put with remote as long as possible and so are many others. The reality is that few will feel comfortable going back to business as usual (meals with people, travel on planes, lots of time spent in conference rooms, meeting clients) for a while, so while it’s definitely a bummer, it’s worth leaning into the virtual thing bc just bc you’re ready won’t mean everyone else is. You could also feel free to organize a zoom or whatever with your class or volunteer to be class social captain (there may be funding for this too; if so, see if you can get a virtual cheese tasting or wine tasting or something organized). Not the same but will go a long way in helping you get as much of the “old” experience while staying safe - and keeps you in the drivers seat as you get to know everyone! I imagine the firm will have some organized events but those may just be less of a priority during these times, so it’s worth seeing if you’d like to take the initiative. One last thing. Your peer group will be an AMAZING support group, and for that reason, it’s wonderful to get to know them. But your performance is what largely drives your success and trajectory at your firm. Just crushing your cases will mean building an organic network, so don’t feel any pressure to network a ton outside of that if that gives you any anxiety - and if you’re busy with case work. Most folks are heads down the first few months anyway as they get up to speed on the job, so the expectation isn’t that you hang out with coworkers every weekend. Set the bar at getting to know a handful of people on your case and in your class reasonably well over the first ~6 months.

Starting in New York so probably not working in person for a long time

It’ll be annoying, but try to talk to people when the chance presents itself and just have casual conversations. Over time it’ll net out to be the same, but in the beginning make the extra effort is all I can suggest.

Are you a campus hire? If so, you should try to stand up more of a community with others in your “class” within your office. If you’re a lateral, it is tough, try to make connections 1:1 with other laterals and be proactive about reaching out to senior people to get to know them over zoom, etc
