I worked for a couple years as a PA on set and switched to post production. I wanted a change because the hours were long (which made work life balance hard) and I didn't feel like I would be able advance my career as much. I don't regret the switch but I'm glad I got the experience I did.
Interesting topic. Just curious, but what makes you want to switch Industries?
Totally understand. I never looked it from that point of view.
Hi! I’m currently trying to do just that! I’m still tempted to go back to film just because it’s hard to switch careers. The biggest thing about set life is the uncertainty of everyday I like the mystery and having to think on my toes that’s what brought me back when I first left
Originally I left because I was sick of the hours and nonexistent work life balance. I wanted something stable
Left concert and event production. Happy to talk.
Transitioned via an MBA. it’s going really well. Lots of transferrable skills.
I don't come from film, but I switched from theater production (which also has the long hours and can be physically/emotionally grueling and went into permanent AV systems installations. Way better hours/work-life balance. I was primarily a technical director/production manager, and transitioning to a project manager role was pretty easy, but finding the right people to talk to get into it was hard. Sometimes I miss the pace of entertainment because the projects have longer timelines and just generally more slower, but overall it was the right choice for me. Happy to chat more if that's helpful!
Hi! I’m currently getting my google project management certification and I have been applying for project coordinator jobs! Do you have any tips? Trying really hard to not take a film job so that I can start my PM career but money is running low
I only started because my friend recommended me to be a camera operator. Maybe the chaos is what makes me want to leave for the most part. Other than that I can handle it with the pay I receive
