Has anyone successfully gotten temporary reduced hours or taken time off for personal issues or mental health issues? Like during a divorce or illness or after a death?

Yes, the key is to be upfront about the loss and talk to both partners and HR as necessary. Feel free to PM me for more details. Good luck with everything.

I got three months of temporarily reduced hours (no pay cut) as a first year associate to deal with physical health issues (not exactly the same, but still relevant). The firm (V5) was surprisingly supportive and kind about it. I think it largely depends on the partners you’re working with and I got lucky on that front.

like

Yes, during my divorce. Totally worth it, especially when it was clear that I was unable to keep working as normal. Talk to HR or your attorney development coordinator.

like

Yes this is normal and happens regularly. It’s probably best to talk to HR first to understand your options before going to the partners.

like

Yes. And I think any of these (temporary or long-term reduced hours, time off, etc.) should be options for you with or without having to state a specific personal/health issue, particularly if you are in a busy practice group in need of more laterals and attorneys generally. (I.e., your firm should be incentivized to work with you and be flexible to keep you, and keep you as happy and healthy as possible.) Questions you should ask, and have proposals at the ready, are how you expect your pay to be affected if you’re taking time off or limiting your availability. I think there’s flexibility given associates’ value in the current market to get more than you might expect for a step back.

I, a childless woman who does not plan to have kids, am jealous of the parental leave parents get to take from work from choosing to have a child (a big life event). I 100% understand that they are working in a different way by taking care of the baby and being deliriously worn out in the process, but it makes me sort of jealous that unless I have a kid there is no life event that I can take ~3 months away from work to focus on and enjoy, plus have my hours prorated and a job to come back to.

Starting a new job soon, with a nice pay bump. Also have been looking for a vacation home for a year now, and we think we found a good one that isn't just flying off the market. Part of me thinks we should go for it, and the other part thinks it's much wiser to wait to make sure I'm actually good at the new job. What do you all think?

Unlimited vacation is kind of a Jedi mind trick. You don't know what's acceptable, so you go the shorter route.

Hi, would love some advice! I’ve been at my company ~1 yr and feeling like I need a change due to various reasons. Not sure if I can apply elsewhere w/ a little less than 1 yr under my belt, and I don’t have many connections in my area. Right now, I play a BSA role on my team, and I’m hoping to pursue product/UX design. I’m also doing a UX bootcamp in the spring & working on a udemy course outside of work for UX/UI. What’s a good stepping stone role (remote preferred)?

Life after audit at Big 4? I am starting to considering leaving after the next busy season, knowing that I genuinely do not enjoy audit. But I am struggling with ideas on what could logically come next… wanting to hear from other professionals on their opportunities after exiting Big 4. If I leave on my estimated timeline I will have completed 1 busy season as a S1, with 2.5ish years total experience at B4.
