Look for private companies who are selling into the government sector. They’ll scoop you up in a second.
The nonprofit sector is usually more open to public sector experience. It's a tough transition otherwise. What industry are you hoping to break into?
Since I live in the Bay Area I’m scoping out non-technical jobs at tech companies. I’m not prioritizing them since it feels so competitive, but I also feel like there aren’t other roles I can find. I’m honestly very open to any industry!
Consulting will take ya!!
Another vote for consulting, it's easy to pivot into based on the govt experience I've found
I have hopped from private to Govie back to private back to govie & now in private, however I've always stayed focused on the Federal market space, so transitioning back & forth was easy. Most Federal contracts are looking to hire prior Federal employees.
I am experiencing the same difficulties. It is extremely frustrating!
I have and I am happy to help!
Can I DM you? Would love to hear about your background!
I worked for a government agency that managed a few recreation venues including a ski resort, then went to a privately-owned ski resort, and then back to that government agency and there are definitely some differences between the public and private sector! I liked the stability and job security of having a government job, but I hated the pressure of feeling owned by local taxpayers. The privately-owned ski resort felt more like a family and we could let loose and accept gifts. Both jobs had their fair share of drama, but I think it's harder to negotiate in the public sector. I think it more depends on the type of position you are applying for and experience on whether private employers are interested in you; most private companies have no idea what it's like to work in the public sector. Good luck in your job search, no matter which direction you decide to go!
