I was doing trusts and estates at a big firm and realized I wanted to do litigation. I first talked to some of the litigation partners I knew and they said they would love to have me, but had two open offers out. Both people accepted so it was a wait and see on when there would be another opening. I ended up getting a job at a boutique firm (~15 or 20 lawyers) with a good reputation. From there I ended up moving to a more mid-size / biggish (but not big law) firm and it's been fantastic. I think you can use your experience at [well-known firm] to move practices and after getting some experience could move again to where you really want to be.
