Has anyone switched geographies (Low Cost to High Cost). Is it expected that your salary would be readjusted? Looking at a country switch.

It depends on your relocation package. In my situation, you have to be assertive, and push for what you think would be a fair adjustment.

You’ll have to negotiate for every dime - do your homework. If you move to NYC, do you think you’re going to want to keep a car? If you do, parking costs as much as a mortgage in places like Grand Rapids. Then you’ll need to budget for mass transit, cabs, and Uber/Lyft trips to move around daily (one does not use a car in Manhattan for commuting). Food is expensive. Storage for all the stuff you can’t fit in your now likely smaller home is expensive. Movie tickets are expensive ($17.50 for a ticket - that’s non-imax and before popcorn). Rent is astronomical. And I say this as someone who’s lived in and around the city my entire life. Be prepared when you have your discussion, as earlier posters suggest. But, if you’ve never lived in one, you will find a larger city has opportunities you can’t enjoy anywhere else. Good luck with your negotiations!

Note: I tried to edit this post after re-reading that it was a country switch, but got locked out. Same rules apply - there are sites and reports that can help figure cost of living differentials to help you with your negotiations (because the situation is true in London, HK, Sydney, Bruno’s Aires, etc.). Ideally, you’ll want to speak with someone in a similar position as you (professional, married/single, kids/childfree, if kids, similar ages, etc.) so you can get boots on the ground insight. If you are making an internal transfer, try and find someone in that office to speak with. If this is a new firm, use your contacts (including 2nd level contacts through linked in, for instance) and get insight. Also, better real estate firms in that location might take your cold call and give you advice with the possibility of getting your business if you move. Just a thought ...

Moved from low cost area to NYC. You have to go into the first recruiter call knowing what you want. Figure out discretionary income in both areas based on similar lifestyle/apartment. I agree with Barclays that you have to be assertive once you know what you’re worth in that new city.
