Has anyone switched to work internally for their firm? Or weighed the options? Looking to get off the road for awhile, seems like a good option and (at my firm) you keep your base pay (cont’d)

I did this. Love it

I did this. Took yrs to find the right role. Progression def slowed despite always SA rating. But, you navigate internal too, and find the best spot, and now I’m in a better position should I want to go industry. Best, I LOVE my work now. Loyalty through the roof and can totally do things to help peers still client facing I can ONLY do internal. And, I see my daughter every day and spend my nights w her. Absolute payoff!

like

Sure, first I’d gone on FMLA and then LOA so I was out one yr. then as a returning parent I felt great support. All during that time I kept networking w other women. And it was one of them that suggested the role I tried.

First time was good but the leads were NEVER transparent about growth opportunities. They took all my time and effort but finally, when pushed, admitted they had no plans for next level.

I found a new leader, explained my goals, and he has been supportive. So I’d sum this as a situation where I got my foot in the door to Corp functions. Networked, and kept proving how my experience in consulting brought value, and now have very much defined and grown my role around my strengths.

I believe supports there for good ppl, w good skills, to Corp functions.

What area are you in? I’m Midwest. Will affect how many roles and how often they open

I would be leaving as a top third performer, always beating utilization goals, etc. I would imagine (depending on the market of course) I would be able to come back, although timing might dictate level. I’m probably two cycles out from being a director from now, and not sure if the pay raise is commensurate with the additional hours/responsibilities. Also internally have the option of getting a title promotion to senior manager/associate director. Long term I could see myself growing and moving upwards internally if I liked it and there are opportunities. I do like consulting but the travel gets harder with a young family

I did it and love it. I've been in various internal roles for a couple of years. The pace can sometimes be annoyingly slow and you do lose a certain amount of of respect with some people. There's much less movement. But the rewards in quality of life (I work remotely) have been well worth it.

like

Is it true, in this case, that you could move out to industry without taking much of a hit?

I did it - May slow down promotion path ,BUT it’s a big win for our family - I get to keep my job, keep my sanity (No judgement , but I would be a crazy person if I didn’t work) and get a paycheck. With two little kiddos and work from home , drop offs, pickups, sick days are a little easier to handle than if I was client facing. On the flip side I do miss the client facing environment, and hurts a little to see peers get promoted at year end (yes, I said it, but I’m being honest) - but I guess that’s a compromise i am willing to make for now. It’s all about your perspective OP and what you are willing to settle on at the end of the day. I admire families who make it work with a full time consulting lifestyle - not sure how they do it!!

Depends on the firm you are in. Other options include taking on a staffing role internally as well. Or a 100% people coach role

like

100% people coaching role? That sounds super interesting. The favorite part of my job at my old firm was mentoring and being a counselor. Didn’t realize you could do this full time.

I also did this and am loving it. Because I’m in a more specific role that gets to work with Senior Leadership in my practice, I’m also building useful relationships and expertise

like

Love this thread. Can any internal folks elaborate on their exact role! My wife and I would love to start a family in the next few years, so I’d consider going internal for the right role...

like

I am currently on an internal role with the Advisory Quality team that will last a year with a potential for 2 years. It is usually reserved for managers, but I am a heavy senior. The quality team that I’m on reviews engagements from start to finish assessing the quality standards and whether risks were properly identified and mitigated based on company policy. I work directly with the partners on engagements so exposure is great and keeps me closely engaged with the client-facing side while learning the do’s and don’ts for when I’m promoted. Some people on the team are permanent and some are rotators like myself. Pace is slower and my days run 8am to 5:30/6pm with a lot of flexibility. My director has 2 young kids so she starts her day later and works again after the kids go to bed. Gonna be hard to get back on the road!

like

and keep the good will / network you’ve built up over time, plus it seems like it would be a better path to go back into consulting eventually. Biggest risk is that you are overhead now. Obviously less bonus, no travel perks but the additional time at home more than makes up for that. Options would be Ops/Technology Enablement roles. Would appreciate thoughts

like

It could be tough to move externally to another consulting firm if that is ultimately the path that you take, but should not hinder you when it comes to industry opportunities.

Not as much opportunity to advance but allows you to stay at the same level and have better work/life.

like

Think it’s a great option if you want to stay with the firm. You get to leverage your network and knowledge of being in a client-facing role. Def look into it but also know there are pros and cons related to Comp.

like

I’m a new parent on an internal rotation right now in an enabling area. Loving it. Team is great, exposure to very senior leaders, and done by 5/6 most nights. I will say it’s still hard work and the team is spread pretty thin, but a great option if you’re looking to get off the road. Only concern is my SM travels a lot and has a lot on her plate so I’m not too jazzed about switching and gunning for SM. Debating staying in Consulting and trying to stay on internal consulting projects for a couple years to get the pay increases and then switching over to enabling as SM vs switching now but very torn

likefunny

Hard to say without knowing more about the circumstances. But good internal roles don’t come around all the time. If you have one now and need the flexibility it provides, and you like it, you may not want to lose it just to (potentially) trade up. Plus as 1y M you have opportunity to move up in your internal role. The Oppty to move up declines with more seniority.

I did this to be get off the road and spend time with my family. I miss client service every once in a while but the benefit to me and my family make the move worth it

like

Agreed. Know lots of people who are successfully doing this for better work/life flexibility. Wife has been doing this for 5 years now. Cons are a near-stalled career in terms of upward progression (title or remuneration).

like

I did an it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Switched three years ago and could never go back. Work directly with leadership and made incredible connections, great work life balance, often get to work remotely. Sure maybe less pay and at times longer to get promoted but so worth it to have a life again and be able to spend quality time doing things outside of work.

like

For me a mix of compliance and innovation roles. But I know people who do everything from Talent support, CFO support, chief of staff roles, governance, you name it

like

When doing this you just have to beware of leadership changes. New leaders of internal functions like to shape things. They may decide that your position or team is no longer necessary on relatively short notice.

like

This is very true.

Another question - can anyone talk about the process of moving internal? Did you find the role first and apply, or did you tell someone you wanted to go internal and then find roles through your network? How widespread did you make your interest known before applying?

like

Second letting your network know. The role I took wasn’t widely posted and I only heard about it because someone in my network who knew I was looking heard about it and recommended me

like

That’s a good point too...it sounds like the balance is way better internally, no surprise, and that the work is interesting and can be fulfilling but it also sounds like growth/promotion might be slower internally in a consulting firm than in industry...

like

Do you have the option to return to client-facing after a while? What are your longer term goals?

M1 do you see growth opportunities internally? I imagine they do value former consultants, especially from the same firm

Another way to think about it - client service tends to be up or out - internal doesn’t tend to be like that as much. Perform and stay at a level as a destination.

Hi everyone,

I appeared in L2 round of Capgemini recently.
Just after the intro first question they asked me " Do you have any offer and amount?" This question was asked in technical round.
I'm sure that guy wasn't a Manager.

I don't think he know how to take an interview.

Even after creating 2 asked program and answering 80% of their questions correctly.
Got rejected.
Didn't expect this kind of L2 round from Capgemini.
