Has anyone taken a 2am Amtrak? I realized I booked a 2:40am not 2:40pm and I’m very nervous now as I am female and traveling alone. A little worried about Moynihan at 2am re safety. Planning on ubering to station

I took the 2am train last week and it felt super safe. My wife was with me, and we were able to sleep the whole trip. All passengers seemed normal and also tried to sleep.
I wouldn’t worry a lot.

like

Sht OP, that’s scary. I was attacked two summers ago and still get nervous walking around.

The 2:40 AM to Boston is super safe. I’ve done it before as a solo woman and haven’t had any issues. My tip is to get to the station early and wait in the Amtrak lounge, which is guarded and you need a ticket to get in. The area just has folks waiting for the train and no one will bother you there. Do a practice run the day before (or earlier in the day) if you are nervous about locating it.

I’ve taken this train before too and thought it was fine. Penn sucks generally so it sucks more when it’s quiet but I didn’t feel unsafe. I think the 8th avenue amtrak entrance is open but you should be able to Google to confirm

Your attitude in the way you respond to everyone is annoying. How are you this unlikable of a person?

She’s from Capco. They’re full of arrogant, entitled pricks and pricksesses. As you can all see from her snappiness throughout.

You should be able to change it free on Amtrak if you are worried (I believe they are still waiving change fees) but you will be totally fine!

ETA: I still subway at 2am - I look for cars with couples / other women and have always felt fine.

I’ve taken the train many times at night, it’s not a big deal.

I’m sure you’ll be okay, but why risk it? To save $200. I’m a tall, athletic man and I would avoid taking a 2.40am AMTRAK. If price is a huge issue during the day, then would you consider taking a bus, or plane instead, or even catching a bus or taxi somewhere just out of Manhattan and buying a slightly cheaper Amtrak ticket from there.

like

Yeah I took a 3am departure to DC, as a solo woman. I felt completely fine, I fell asleep for most of it! Once you're on the Amtrak, it's no worries. It's going through Penn Station that's the sketchiest.

like

Mohinian and Penn Station are 2 different buildings across from each other. It’s newer and practically no homeless folks (not saying they would attack you even if there were). Also, in general more cops/security in transit areas because of the holidays.

The new station would be the least of my worries.

like

The bus is super unsafe and doesn’t really go to the area I need to go. It’s right before thanksgiving and with the economy the way it is I’m very afraid of losing my job. It’s an emergency train due to a death in the family and I already ate the cost of my flight

like

It’s not the same route as Boston unfortunately

You should be fine just make a beeline to the train. Don’t wear your headphones so you can be aware of your surroundings. Moynihan is well lit.

Moynihan is closed overnight. OP will still have to use Penn.

I’ve called and had them change my ticket without paying the difference. Probably helps to be nice.

I’ve also done the 2:40am to Boston (partner and I were long distance back in the day) — I felt safe ubering to the station and waiting inside! Up to you and your safety levels though.

I took a 2:40am train a couple weeks back. You go to Penn and not Moynihan and I believe the open entrance is one 31st and 8th. I had to show my ticket to enter both the building and Amtrak waiting area.

Hi OP - it may be the last thing you want to do at a time of grief, but worth calling airlines (and maybe Amtrak too) and ask about bereavement fares.

This is a thing, and some carriers will offer you a significant discount vs cost. Sometimes it's on faith, sometimes they ask for a link to the service, sometimes it's after the flight and they ask you for a program, an obituary, etc.

I hope this helps and you can get home safely without extra stress and pain during this unhappy period. God bless.

Hocus Pocys I have taken plenty of 6 AM trains. You will be fine.

You’ll be fine, if ur worried just stay in the middle of rooms away from walls and corners so there’s plenty of visibility on you!

The earliest I took was a 5am Saturday out of penn station. I had to walk a few blocks from my hotel and I wasn’t super comfortable either. Ultimately I was fine, but I understand your concern. I just wouldn’t have headphones in until I’m the train so you can be aware of what’s going on around you. I think Moynihan is pretty clean though (mostly because of how new it is) so I’m sure you’ll be ok, especially if you’re ubering to the station. I would say walking there is where it would be risky.

like

It has always been a train for an emergency death. Was planning on flying home to VT but my mother passed last night so I need to head home a bit earlier to get things sorted

like

Totally fine. Took many trains past midnight.
Take an Uber or taxi to the station, walk straight to the waiting hall.
Even at this time, there is security.

Thank you!!! Super helpful! Is it Penn or Moyhnihan?Which entrance

It’s the same - 31st/8th - just a super short walk
Not sure if the Starbucks is open so bring your own food and drinks for the ride

like

You’re not wrong. It’s the same station, but Moynihan is across the street.

I’ve done the 2:40 am and it kinda sucked, though the biggest issue is that they refused to dim the lights in my car, so I couldn’t actually sleep.

Also, keep in mind that Moynihan is closed 1-5 am, so you’ll have to wait in the old Penn waiting area. I didn’t feel unsafe, per se, but it’s definitely weirder in the middle of the night.

like

Isn’t there a 6:45 train that’s better? Glad the toxic travel culture has ended.

like

Unfortunately to Vermont the options are quite limited, the 2:40am with a transfer in is the earliest and cheapest option since there are usually only 1 -2 direct trains

Reading the chain of comments, and I was going to be helpful like so many of you, but I detect a tint of an attitude problem from the OP. She’s snippy and rude to people trying to help her. So on that note, figure it out yourself OP. You’re a big girl. Living in a big girl city. You’ll live. Most likely.

Ah ok, that makes sense….justifying crappy behavior is the theme of the 2020s. It’s the civility that separates humans from animals amongst other things. The whys and why nots are not that important to that principle. They’re just color. I’m ok with a nobody online thinking I have no empathy.✌🏽

I’ve left in the morning which is fine. I have one returning at 11:30 and sketched out about it as a man so changed it to an over night train arriving in the day time. If anything get to the station around mid night. But would adjust the time.

I’ve taken tons of trains that come in between 9:45 and 11:00. Just make sure you have an Uber ready to go

I understand that time to market is important in consumer product goods, but being constantly behind schedule and rushing everything is terrible for the team's morale.
