During the break I had to ultimately decide if I wanted to continue doing the type of work I was doing and/or working for the same company. Ultimately I decided I wanted to move on I started looking for new opportunities. The job search was tough but only because I was making sure that everything was in alignment with what I wanted for my future work situation. I wasn’t going to settle. Leave ran out so I went back to work while still interviewing for other opportunities and about 6 weeks in I landed my ideal position . I gave a 2 weeks notice stating the same medical issue as unresolved and needing to not work there to address it. No bad blood and I’m happier than ever in my new position.
Same
Gen X and nothing to add but I’m proud of you for prioritizing your mental health. 90’s and 2000’s we were scared to ask for time off. We rushed back after 12 weeks of childbirth or earlier in fear of being let go. Mental health was not a thing. Take care of you! Hugs!
On leave now. It has taken a long time to feel better — so I wouldn’t approach this as goal-oriented about post-leave outcomes right now.
Take it one step at a time. What do you need right now? Work with a great therapist (you might need to interview several or find a new one). Are there new diagnoses you need to consider? Are there physical health issues going on—stress can also lead to headaches, nerve pain, insomnia. Also, in therapy, work on understanding why this workplace made you sick.
When you feel better and are on the healing path, only then re-assess if you want to return or find a new job or even career. It’s never too late to pivot. See a leave as an opportunity to reset and try a new path. Or to fall back in love with your work. Your gut will tell you whether going back will just start the cycle again.
I’m currently on leave. Supposed to go back mid-Aug after 4 months out. I’m not ready to go back and in the same boat. I know I do not want to grind this hard anymore (management consulting) so I’m going to extend the leave.
It’s a tough market so that gives me pause but I have a mortgage too. I keep thinking that maybe this is my time to “Eat, Pray, Love” or go “Wild”. But it is so darned scary to think of throwing away everything that I have worked for, for the last 25 years. But I am exhausted, completely unmotivated and miserable.
I don’t have an answer for you. Just wanted you to know that you are not alone. Hugs.
Thank you for sharing ❤️ just knowing I’m not crazy or “ungrateful” for wanting something else after almost-20 years is so helpful.
Reading this made me tear up! Thank you for sharing this ❤️❤️❤️ and congrats on landing the right gig!!!
I recently took medical leave and FMLA due to stress induced health issues. When I returned my company manipulated me out if my role. I am now in an unstable transition that could lead to unemployment at the end of the year. I wanted to pivot to consulting and the offered me an “opportunity” to work in that part of the company without disclosing that there is no budget or enough business to keep me there permanently. I am now looking for a job after 12 years. Even though I was ready to make s change a part of me regrets sharing my struggles with them. I did not need more stress after expressing my health issues with HR.
I’m being intentional about my job search while trying not to fall apart again. I am trusting God on this one.
That’s so awful. I’m so sorry they made things worse for you after you were vulnerable. And have given them 12 years! This goes to show that companies aren’t worth running ourselves sick for them because they will walk over our bodies and keep going. Good luck to you! ❤️
