Again it's khooni Monday after long weekend.
Yep. Took a big cut but I love the people I work for, I don’t ever get stressed about tomorrow and my work manageable enough that I still consult on the side. It’s 1000% worth the pay cut
(Oh and I’ll never retire but that’s an entirely different issue)
Maybe I am selling a unicorn here - I switched from a Fortune 500 company to a small 200 person company. I am getting equity in the company but it’s paper money until company goes ipo. Not sure when that will happen. My take home cash compensation is the same as my previous company.
My quality of life has significantly improved without taking a huge pay cut because in my, smaller, company I like everyone. Literally everyone. My work is more fulfilling. My boss and coworkers show a lot of appreciation for what I do. I have a leadership role with a very good work-life balance.
I don’t think you need to take a pay cut. When you interview at a company, truly judge, how people are treating you, do they care about your well being, etc. I was blown away during my interview, how genuinely nice everyone was.
I am a woman of color in tech. My 2 cents.
Yes, I did. It was worth it for my mental health. Plus I love my manager and the team.
How much lower in compensation did you end up taking ?
I took a $5k cut. So it wasn’t big sacrifice
I’m currently job searching.. and many of the roles that I’m interested sound “easier” than what I do today. But with the easier job.. comes the cut in pay. The range can be a 20-30% decrease. I don’t want to trade one problem for another - and turn to be unhappy because I can’t afford things. But right now, I am working nonstop. Even if the pandemic weren’t happening; I couldn’t even take time off to enjoy a vacation. So wondering what was the amount (dollars or percent) decrease that you took, and how do you feel about it now?
Yes. Took a 30% cut because my mental health needed priority then..has been a good decision personal life-wise.
Sticking my head in to read the comments section. I’m definitely interested in giving this a shot 😊
I did this recently - also moved to a less expensive market overall; time will tell, but I have deduced that the new role is not as “flexible” as it was made to appear in the interview process and there’s a fair amount of information hoarding (everything administrative, whether re: office procedures, Covid exposures, general scheduling, or employees joining/leaving the firm is jealously guarded “need to know” information), hiding the ball, and micromanaging that I’m discovering. I say all this to say be as sure as you can that the new role is truly a departure from those aspects you’re trying to get away from given that the product doesn’t always line up with the advertising.
If you're all alone in this world, without wife and kids and dreams that need money, you can do this
I am the wife and my husband is going back to school. Fair enough we don’t have kids and don’t plan to have in future. Also my compensation is 200k+ before equity, so it didn’t feel like a significant life change for us. We are frugal and live a modest lifestyle
I've taken pay cut to switch to a better role. Though there is not much difference in work pressure, I'm still at mental peace in this role.
