Has anyone taken longer than paid leave after baby? I am thinking about taking 6-7 months (a month or two past paid leave). Wondering if it is career limiting.

And if your job would penalize you for your family values then fuck em, why work there?

1-2 extra months off is nothing. One of my colleagues was off for a year, and bounced right back. Take the time you need/want. If you rush your career now, you’ll regret missing on the personal side. I’ve always added extra vacation to my leaves (3 maternity leaves). Is there a strict time line for you to make partner or get promoted? Nope! Do things on your own time. In my experience, the hardest critic will be yourself.

like

6-7 months isn’t even very long, compared to your career.

like

Once you’re out, you’re out. An extra couple months is not going to move the needle career wise. Take as long as you can make work with your personal situation

like

I took 7 months and wasn’t a problem at all. I did that for both pregnancies and the second was definitely needed because I had twins. The firm will allow you to take up to a year with your job guaranteed back, though as expected only the 4 months are paid.

like

Thanks everyone! I am going to do it!!

I took 7 months as well as and I came back to pick up where I left off with my career. I dont think it should be career limiting and I agree with everyone on this thread. Take the time to enjoy the bond that only occurs in the first year of your child’s life. You can’t get that time back. Do you know how many mother’s out there wish they had the opportunity we have to take this much time off?

like

Like said above, you cannot get that time back. Take the time off. I went back after a year. That time at home was more important than a promo that year for me, and I have not regretted it for a second.

like

I think you have to ask yourself where do you put your value? Having that time Home w the baby or getting back to bolstering up your career? I also got promoted the year I had a baby and was on leave so baby doesn’t automatically equal career dehibitation

Do it! No regrets here

I’m doing it! I’d like 7-8 months in total.

I have seen that it is hard to transition back if you are out for more than 6 months. I advise new parents to take as much time as they can financially afford but consider coming back, even part time at around 6 months.

To add-I don’t think any choice is career limiting. It’s your choice.

FTM - I’m just curious on how some of your maternity leave is set up. I received short term disability pay for 6 weeks and then paid from my job for 6 - they offered additional bonding time, but unpaid. The paid portion came from my “sick time.” I wasn’t sick, I was caring for and bonding with my son. That’s been bothering me since I returned. Now I don’t have any sick leave and any last minute time that I need to take is unpaid. Other countries give moms the entire year, 100% paid 🥴

Been 2 weeks and I am tired of pumping. I only pump like 20-30 per session and 5x a time but each time it takes almost 1h from start to finish (lube the flange, gather the equipment, find a spot, find my water/food, pump, clean up and put stuff away) and I am not even washing them (hubby is doing that). What did you do to make it more efficient? Also I can't seem to figure my flange fitting. I follow the guidelines and the suggested one is more uncomfortable than a large size. Help.

Hypothetical here: you are a parent and your child got into two schools for undergrad. The first school is a US top 30 University out-of-state, but you have to pay full sticker price ($60k+ per year). The second school is a good in-state university and 20% the cost. If your child goes in-state, you agree to invest the residual ($50k per year) in an S&P 500 fund that releases upon graduation. What is the best outcome for your child?

I work with several people with kids and I have noticed quite often that they completely disregard any issues of people with no kids and try to one up work life imbalance conversations with stories of them being parents. It must be hard being a parent but I don’t think people at work should be treated differently or given any additional consideration just because they have a kid. You already get parental leave so If I’m expected to work 12hr I ask the same to be expected from my peers with kids.

Why is maternity leave, policy and other women's issues not important as compared to Juneteenth, coed bathrooms, and all the other issues in the media today? Women are half the population and at an average of 2.1 kids per woman, these are major issues. Are we not vocal enough? Organized enough? Not a serious voting demographic? Too grateful things are better in this generation? What is it? Why does 50% of the population matter less compared to these smaller marginal groups?

Hi fam! Me and my partner (females) just got an oral consent from my partners best friend (gay male) to be a sperm donor. Anyone has experience with this? I know lesbians usually go to sperm bank but we wanted to know “baby daddy” and have him involved as a godparent and when kids ask questions introduce him as a father. Personal life stories and dos and donts welcome. All my friends are straight or gay men so I have this resource and general internet.

Is there a time when people generally “start” work remotely? Back when I was a summer before the pandemic, I commonly saw people go in between 9-10 am but I didn’t know what the norm is now that we are remote. I see emails at 8 am and I’m not sure if I’m expected to respond then or not. Also if you are on a deal where some of the members are in NY and you’re in the Midwest, are you expected to go by their times and be on when they are on?
