Has anyone taught Romeo & Juliet before? I am worried about the suicide scenes, as I have a few students who recently attempted suicide. How do you deal with that aspect in your classroom?

I teach elementary, but here are my thoughts. What if you tied it to today’s epidemic of teen suicide and have your students discuss how Romeo and Juliet’s suicides could have been prevented if they had proper resources and education available? You could make an entire unit out of the relevance of Romeo and Juliet in today’s youth and truly tackle the tough issues. Rewrite the script! Discuss different scenarios. Kids need to talk about tough issues in a trusting environment. If I am off base, forgive me! I teach littles, but I am an out of the box thinker!

I taught it for 9th graders. It is tedious to teach but I found assigning reading parts in advance and allowing them to have fun with it by allowing costumes, etc. made it “light and fun”. The students had so much fun watching what their peers came up with that when it came time for the suicide scene...it wasn’t a deep heavy moment.

Oh my gosh, that's so terrible. Really gave me pause about what we do with our students.

I have thought the play countless times. I never really had an issue with the suicide scene. I would usually have a discussion of rational thinking and the class all agreed that the two were being irrational in their thinking and actions.

Thinking back to when I was in school. What do teachers have to do now that they didn't 20-30 years ago? What do they need to provide now that they did not have to provide back then? I don't recall buying anything than pencils/paper/folders. We covered our used books with newspaper or paper bags Classrooms were simple, not every inch of wall space was covered in charts, etc. The districts/teachers supplied nothing extra. What changed that teachers have to spend their own $ now?

Hey! I’m a self-contained teacher for grades K-2. This is my first year at the school I’m currently in, and apparently in the yearbook every year they have a class page solely for the handful of students in my classroom. They do this instead of putting my students in the yearbook page of the class they participate in for inclusion services. I feel like this is extremely wrong and violates some privacy laws. Do y’all have suggestions on how to bring this up with admin and the yearbook director?

Is there a wrong time to quit? Started in audit at Big 4 less than a year ago and I already feel burned out. I was planning on staying for a few years and then moving to private accounting and getting a job with better pay, better hours, etc. But at this point, I don’t think I want to work in accounting long term. Is it bad to quit a job I’ve been at for less than a year? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
