Has anyone that is now in public accounting or at a law firm worked as a clerk for The United States Tax Court? What were the pros and cons? I am in public accounting now and I am considering an offer there.

I’d 100% take the clerkship and exit PA. Path to partner at law firms is much quicker (and you get paid more on the way) and a clerkship is a logical exit point and opens doors.

1-2 years depending on judge. Some may extend, I know of one instance where it was 2 years and then extended for 1.

I once wrote an article that the legendary Judge Tannenwald of the Tax Court cited in a regular TC decision. But I didn’t find out I had been cited by name for many years. Then the Tax Court later issued a memo decision in another case and they referred back to the prior case to the specific page where they cited me and said “see the authorities cited thereat.” I always thought that was pretty cool.

Thanks. Not an attorney. Should have gone that route but didn’t want to go in debt for the three years. Still regret that. Did Masters in Tax instead. Article was based on 1983 paper from last class. Did not find out they cited me until accidental Westlaw search in about 1995 or so. Probably would have helped career at the time.

I’ve been considering applying to the tax Court to be a clerk. What did you do for your letters of recommendation? What about a writing sample?

Thanks!
