Has anyone thought about teaching online next year? Has anyone already made the switch? Pros/Cons?

I teach online with VIPKID. It’s totally possible to go full-time and I really like how they do business.

Pros:
Much less drama!
Stay home with my dog
No taking an hour to drive to work
Decide your own hours
Work and make as much or as little as you can handle
Your lessons are recorded with the student; build your own skills and be protected
No students to trash your classroom
You learn so much about technology
The students WANT you to be their teacher, and you do build relationships with them

Cons:
you sacrifice a good insurance plan (independent contractors pay more for things like this)
No 401k
Takes time to build a client base (it took me up to 7 months to always be booked, but it’s a learning process)
I do not get the Public Service Loan forgiveness plan (online is not non-profit)
If you don’t have some form of social life, it can lonely.
Class cancellations are a gamble with your paycheck.
Expect to drop some cash on stuff or upgrading your technology, but doing research and pairing with a mentor can save you on this.
No paid days off

I work for an online public charter school. The pay is less then brick and mortar but the benefits are the same. It harder than I thought it would be but I’m starting to find my groove (1st year). We have a mixture of high flyers who are either trying to graduate early or are busy with crazy sports schedules. We also have a lot of kids who were not successful in brick in mortar for a lot of reasons: social anxiety, got expelled and this is their last chance, etc.
Pros: stay home with doggo
Can get house work done during the day instead of having to come home to a pile of laundry
Eat at home/less likely to eat unhealthy
Less behavior issues to deal with
Sleeping in a bit

Cons:
The students can be hard to engage, they don’t HAVE to come to the live lessons or answer the phone when you call
It is hard to get a read on who is struggling and what would help them
I find myself doing a lot of extra work outside of just teaching my classes

I have done VIPKid and didn’t love it for a lot of reasons. In terms of traditional type school (like teach local students in an online setting) it’s something I’d consider doing, maybe when I get burnt out in the classroom or to do on the side. Pros are obviously working from home, don’t have to get ready, more flexible, curriculum may be provided so less planning. Cons would be less freedom in curriculum if it’s provided, no face to face or chance to really develop relationships with students, hard to find opportunities that provide full time and good pay (a lot of schools try to do this on an adjunct basis so you don’t get benefits or good pay)

Can you explain more about why you didn’t like VIPKid? I thought about it a lot after a really rough year last year. I haven’t completely ruled it out, so I’d love to hear about your perspective.

I don't know if it's just me but it bothers me when it is mentioned on the news about teacher shortage and never heard that teachers are also leaving because they are disrespected ( by students and or administrators) and because of lack of student interest in education. And what's even more troubling they are filming the news in perfect classrooms giving the impression there is something wrong with teachers. I want to invite them to 2 of my classes and see why I struggle.

Tell me something you enjoy about your school. This could be a people, a space, an ideal, something that makes you happy when you think about your school and your job.

Here’s mine: All summer a small group of teachers and administrations have been repainting the whole building and adding murals to spruce up the school. When we reopen we want the space to feel exciting and welcoming.
