I would look into what skills and experience are transferable and then focus on catching up in any areas you're still lacking in. I think it's definitely possible.
I’ve made the move but wondering if pursuing one or the other was more fulfilling/interesting in the long run for those who’ve committed to the switch.
BD is absolutely great if you love networking and working with people day-to-day. There isn't nearly as much office time (hopefully), and the connections you can make can last a lifetime. Depending what type of marketing you are doing, although client facing, you'll have more desk time given the inherent nature of marketing. It is much more go go go because client demands are much higher and focused than that of BD
Yes, you will definitely be able to interact with people more in more interesting scenarios, do all the wining and dining et al. You might miss the thrill of a campaign. It's just more of a straightforward transactional relationship with BD. You might enjoy the strategy for who to pursue, working within timelines to bring the company to a certain place, setting direction and fulfilling that, but it's not got the same collaborative edge or creative reach. Marketing feels like building something together as a whole production, and BD is a much more lone wolf kind of a job. Still, I highly recommend it.
I made that switch to an extent! I was pure marketing (campaigns, PR, etc) but I REALLY liked the BD side - particularly strategy, market research etc. BD was definitely more fun in terms of being able to meet people, build connections etc but I was more interested on the research side so I used the BD experience to move into a more market research focused role. I definitely do not miss marketing honestly, and very happy I don't have to draft press releases and campaign one-liners haha
