I found true pilates prohibitively difficult at the outset (esp considering the price tag) but after working on pilates YT vids at home for a few weeks I was strong enough to do things w the right form. Try that to start?

Yep! I see someone else referenced it below — Blogilates is an excellent place to start. She has videos that work up progressively in difficulty. Start with her 7 day challenges, or 21 day tone series, or look for abs level 1,2,3. (The level 1/2/3 series have different names, but if you poke around you’ll find them)
After a few weeks of her abs vids I finally understood how to do “pilates stance” without neck strain, which opens up most of the pilates ecosystem. Likewise understanding how to do leg lifts without popping your low back — takes a bit of practice but her vids help you build muscle as you’re working up to her level of controlled movements
Fwiw I’ve never done a system that visibly changed my body so fast. And while her YT content is all free, I LOVE her app, it’s cheap and you can autoplay a calendar of prescribed workouts or go a la carte. Same content as YT but amazing user interface
I actually find mat Pilates more difficult. Not a fan of reformer...
I found reformer Pilates really challenging! I started with group classes at solidcore, and they gave a lot of modifications for beginners, which helped.
Depends on city I think. In ny they are on classpass but still about $25/class
If you’re starting off with mat pilates online, Blogilates (she is truly the OG in that space) is a great place to start. Cassey’s energy can be a bit much but she caters to all levels, offers modifications, and is so motivating. All Youtube, so all free!
In terms of reformer Pilates, I do classic reformer Pilates and the Lagree method - it’s really flipping hard but I love it so much. If there are beginner classes, I’d encourage you to try those first. Would recommend a private once you become more familiar (5 classes in) so you can get more out of it as you build more awareness of your body.
I’ve been doing Pilates for 3 years - happy to chat more if you have questions :)
Sounds good!! Excited for your Pilates journey 😌
Mat can be more challenging, since reformer straps allow for a bit of counterweight. Both can be scaled for beginner to advanced, which is partially why it’s so great.
I’d suggest starting with mat to become familiar with the movement and terms; many translate to the reformer. Also, many independently owned studios may require you to come in for a couple privates to ensure you are moving your body appropriately when you join the group classes.
Try looking at pilatesology, pilates anytime, @thebalancedlife. Or search pilates or reformer hashtags on Instagram; there are a ton of people you can follow. Where are you based? I’ll see if I know of any recommended studios in your area.
Plenty of nyc options! I am not familiar with anyone I’d recommend but know there’s a bunch. Try them out and see if you enjoy!
I love reformer pilates!!!! It's not that bad once you get the hang of it. The studios (at least in ny) all have different vibes. Bodyrok is the most chill. Solidcore is the most intense.
